Judith Miller Gets Around to Answering Prison Mail (WaPo)
During the 85 days that Miller was held for contempt of court after refusing to testify about a confidential source, the former New York Times reporter received more than 1,000 letters from well-wishers. Two weeks ago, she mass-mailed a two-page "Dear Friend" letter to 600 people: "I chose to defend your right to know and you were kind enough to write to support my stance."
Journalists' Endless Love for Themselves (Slate)
Jack Shafer: The press is hardly the sentry and bulwark of society reporters imagine it to be. I don't mean to disparage reporters who put their lives on the line, nor the sleuths who sift through databases to uncover wrongdoing, or any other enterprising reporter. But too many journalists who wave the investigative banner merely act as the conduit for other people's probing.
At APME, Mayor Nagin Says Press Ignores the Positive, Post-Katrina (E&P)
Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans criticized ongoing press coverage of this city and efforts to rebuild since Hurricane Katrina, saying the media, local and national, was ignoring many of the positive events. "At times, I would like to see more emphasis on a balanced approach, post-Katrina," Nagin said on the opening day of the Associated Press Managing Editors conference.
TV News Bigs Weigh in on NBC Changes (Inky)
NBC News can slash its budget many ways, but don't ask anchors and correspondents to give up the Benjamins, advises ex-CBS News chief Andrew Heyward. "It's very bad for morale. People take it very personally. When you actually pay somebody less, it tends to have a disproportionate psychological impact on the employee, in my experience."
American Media Misses Restatement Deadline Again (NYP)
For the third time, American Media has blown a deadline for restating its earnings, and the tabloid publisher now won't issue cleaned up financial numbers until early 2007. At the same time, in an 8K filing with the SEC, the company warned that its cash flow for fiscal 2006 is now estimated to be $110.9 million, about 5 percent lower than expected.
Danish Newspaper Acquitted in Trial Over Muhammad Cartoons (Reuters via Yahoo)
A court in Denmark has acquitted daily Jyllands-Posten in a civil case brought by Muslim organizations that accused it of slander for printing cartoons that triggered widespread Muslim anger. As municipal court found in favor of the paper and ordered the seven Danish Muslim organizations who sued it to pay the paper's court expenses.
Media Companies Eying Tribune Papers? (Newsday)
While media companies, many of which are operating under the same circulation and revenue pressures as Tribune, haven't been rushing the table, there has been speculation that one or two have at least considered whether some of the properties fit into their strategic plan.
