Friday morning, El Nuevo Herald freelance cartoonist José Varela called his brother-in-law and said: "Take care of my kids. Don't let them watch TV today." Varela — dressed in a black FBI polo shirt and concealing what turned out to be a toy machine gun — spoke to a security guard, then barricaded himself for 3 1/2 hours in the office of editor Humberto Castello before surrendering.

A Lone Sponsor for a Longer Nightly News (NYT)
A week from tonight, viewers of the NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams will be able to watch more news — and fewer commercials — as a result of a sponsorship deal with the Philips Electronics North America Corporation. The sponsorship is part of a weeklong, $2 million agreement between Philips and the NBC Universal division of General Electric.


The State Of The Press Subpoena (NYT)
In the last 18 months, Eve Burton, general counsel at the Hearst Corporation, says her company has received 80 newsgathering subpoenas, for broadcast stations, newspapers and magazines. "But that was after the Judy Miller case," she said, mentioning the case in which the former New York Times reporter went to jail to protect a source. "In the two years before that, we had maybe four or five subpoenas. We didn't even keep track."
