Glenn Beck Book Debuts at No. 1 on NYT Best Seller List (TVNewser)
Glenn Beck's An Inconvenient Book has premiered at No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list. Insiders tell TVNewser the book has sold more than 50,000 copies in the first week alone and that the publisher has ordered a 5th printing of an additional 150,000 copies. The Headline News host knocks Stephen Colbert out of the No. 1 slot, a spot Colbert has held for six weeks. TVNewser: Recent interview with Beck.
On Iraqi TV, Friends, Dr. Phil, and Satellite Dishes Take Place of Action Flicks and Saddam (NYT)
Gina Chon: I asked some Iraqi friends about their favorite TV shows and their answers surprised me. "Friends, Oprah, Seinfeld," was one reply. Oprah was available on Iraqi TV before the war but most of the other American shows that have since become popular weren't. Lost and Dr. Phil were the favorites mentioned by another Iraqi.
MTV Looking to Expand Mobile Video Social Network to U.S. (Reuters)
Viacom Inc's MTV Networks is eyeing an expansion of its myMTV mobile video social network to other countries beyond Japan, said MTV's president for global digital media, Mika Salmi, on Wednesday. The service lets members use cell phones to share their favorite videos with others in the community.
Yahoo, AOL May Shut Down Web Radio (Mediaweek)
Yahoo and AOL may shut down their Internet radio services after being hit with a 38 percent increase in royalties as a result of the Copyright Royalty Board's decision in March. Yahoo and AOL stopped directing users to their radio sites when SoundExchange began collecting the higher fees in July.
Ford Takes Spot Atop Discovery Channel as Root Exits (TV Week)
Jane Root, who has helped lead the Discovery Channel to a comeback over the past year, is leaving. Discovery Communications named John Ford, who returned to the company earlier this year, to head its flagship channel. Discovery veteran Clark Bunting, now head of the company's production unit, will take over the channels that had been run by Mr. Ford, the Military Channel and Discovery Times.
NYT Op-Ed Page Editor Says 'Enough' to Columnists Feud (Salon)
Joan Walsh: New York Times public editor Clark Hoyt did me the honor yesterday of replying to my column last week asking him to stop the brawl over Ronald Reagan and race on the paper's Op-Ed page. Hoyt declined to step in, but he did pass along news that Times editorial pages editor Andrew Rosenthal had already said, "Enough."
