David Geffen's Bid for L.A. Times: $2 Billion (LAT)
The entertainment mogul has made an all-cash offer, but the newspaper's corporate owner has declined to accept or reject the bid as it continues to seek offers for the entire company. Geffen made the formal offer last month to Tribune Co. but was told by representatives of the Chicago-based media conglomerate that they would not consider it until they had fielded offers for all of Tribune. Guild Approves Deal With Boston Newspaper (Boston Globe)
The Boston Newspaper Guild, which represents newsroom, advertising, and other employees at the Boston Globe, approved a four-year contract that ties pay raises to revenue increases. The 364-194 vote comes nearly two months after union members rejected an offer that tied raises to revenue but excluded revenue of Boston.com, the paper's online affiliate.
Culture Clash in Miami Puts Media in Spotlight (Chicago Tribune)
El Nuevo Herald in Miami triggered a community-wide furor in September when it fired two reporters and severed ties with a freelance writer for working part time for U.S. government-run Radio and TV Marti. The dismissals and their aftermath laid bare a cultural dissonance between how journalism works in the U.S. and how some journalists from Latin America perceive their roles.
