55 Journalist Murders in 2006 (CPJ)
Violence in Iraq claimed the lives of 32 journalists in 2006, the deadliest year for the press in a single country that the Committee to Protect Journalists has ever recorded. Worldwide, CPJ found 55 journalists were killed in direct connection to their work in 2006, and it is investigating another 27 deaths to determine whether they were work-related.
Ruling Extended in Hearst-MediaNews Collaboration (SF Chron)
A federal judge on Tuesday extended an order she issued last month that barred Hearst Corp. and MediaNews Group Inc. from collaborating on local distribution and national advertising sales. Despite assurances by that no such agreement is in the works, Judge Susan Illston said she wants to make it clear that collaboration will not be allowed while a lawsuit against the two companies is pending.
Results Mixed for 'Citizen Newspapers' (LAT)
Mayrav Saar: Across the country "citizen newspapers" are springing up, full of promise, energy and atrocious spelling errors. They're largely written by unpaid, untrained and unedited citizen reporters, who say they "commit acts of journalism" more for kicks than out of a sense of civic calling. Results are mixed.
