Beeb Keeps a Stiff Upper Lip (LAT)
Paul Brownfield: American TV news has a way of stoking vague fears, so it was instructive to turn to BBC, where anchors respond quickly and appropriately when serious world events turn local. Guardian: BBC audience doubles. Guardian: World flocks to British news websites. BBC: Friday newspapers in U.K. "reverberate with shock."

Bloggers, Citizen Photogs, Document London Blasts (WSJ)
As journalists scrambled to cover the London bomb blasts, ordinary citizens went online to share pictures snapped by cameraphones and reports of what they saw. Guardian: Citizen journos create a "new world of media." NYT: Online photo-sharing sites and Web blogs began chronicling the attacks soon after they occurred, often posting material gathered before professional news organizations arrived on the scenes. WaPo: The availability of cameras, combined with the ability to transmit pictures and text instantaneously, is enabling the world to view news with nearly the immediacy of a victim or eyewitness. LAT: The camera-equipped cellphone, which wasn't available commercially a few years ago, has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Salon: Eyewitness accounts of the bombings compiled from blogs.

Miller's Cell Has No Bars (NYT)
Though the jail has a reputation as a relatively progressive institution, jailed New York Times reporter Judith Miller slept on the floor last night because of a shortage of beds. Economist: Miller becomes a martyr. WaPo: Both Miller and rap entertainer Lil' Kim had to walk through a gauntlet of media on their way into and out of the courtroom. AJR: Miller doing the right thing. CSM: Will sources now use journalists differently to leak information? CSM: Ripple effect of Miller jailing "chilling," writes Daniel Schorr. NYRB: The Supreme Court has recognized privileged communication between attorneys and clients, wives and husbands, and psychotherapists and patients; it is in this perspective that the cases of Judith Miller and Matt Cooper should be seen, writes Anthony Lewis. Guardian Editorial: The American constitution no longer protects press freedom. Press Think: It's time for journos to give Robert Novak the cold shoulder, writes Jay Rosen. Business Week: Business realities are at odds with good journalism, writes Jon Fine.

Scamming Publisher Could Face Long Sentence (AP via WaPo)
A federal indictment last month charged Ivery Press with defrauding 15 writers from 1997 through 2002. Advocates for writers say such operations prey on would-be authors.

Woodward, Bernstein, and Brokaw (MSNBC)
Transcript: How Woodward met "Deep Throat" and how the two reporters used his information to crack the Watergate scandal wide open. Slate: It's no picnic being Woodward's daddy, writes Timothy Noah. New Zealand Herald: Journalism takes courage, says "Woodstein" editor Ben Bradlee.

GM's LAT Boycott Continues (E&P)
On April 7, GM corporate announced that it would no longer run ads in the paper because of a series of negative columns. Since then, even advertising from GM dealers has dropped sharply.

New Film Takes on Tabloid TV (USAT)
Crónicas is a raw and powerful suspense thriller set in Latin America that also is a timely commentary on the sensationalism of TV news. Gay City News: To combat the tabloid sensibility, one has to understand its appeal. Crónicas seems to be made by a director who would turn the channel past Fox News or stop reading the New York Post after 30 seconds.

Tribune to Support FAIR Act (Mediaweek)
While broadcasters normally eschew government regulation, many, such as Tribune Broadcasting, are ready to support the bill that would subject Nielsen Media Research to mandatory accreditation.

Advanstar Considers Sale (Duluth News Tribune)
Scarcely one month after Advanstar Communications Inc. spun off a $185 million chunk of its business to Questex Media Group, the remainder of the company could be sold off, too. Folio: While Advanstar was long thought to be grooming for an IPO, the explosion of high dollar b-to-b sales this year could have prompted the change in direction.

When the Film Outshines the Book (NYT)
Many great novels, including War of the Worlds and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, have been wildly overshadowed by the movies made from them.

Media Execs in Sun Valley See Biz Risk in Attacks (Reuters)
U.S. executives meeting at an exclusive investment conference in Sun Valley, Idaho said the bomb attacks in London could have a dampening effect on consumer confidence.

For Editors On TV, Ethics Get Murky (Folio:)
Dylan Stableford: Church and state is the standard for ad/edit within the pages of a magazine, but when it comes to an editor taking products to TV the line has become increasingly blurry.

TV Losing Its Funny? (NYT)
Virginia Heffernan: Try as they might, alternative comedies—a medley of reality, stand-up and sketch—just don't yield simple, genuine laughs.

Podcasting Goes Mainstream (Economist)
Now that Apple has built the software into new iPods, musicians and pundits who have no hope of ever making it on commercial radio can now build their own audiences.

Corporate Radio Tunes in to Hispanics (Santa Fe Reporter)
Nadra Kareem: Although Hispanics were named the nation's largest ethnic minority in 2003, the English-language music industry has largely ignored them. Until now.

When an Anonymous Source Is Wrong (CJR Daily)
Paul McCleary: Just about everything in the L. A. Times' anonymous-sourced report that the year-long labor dispute between NHL players and owners was about to end was untrue.

Author 'Ed McBain' Dies (NY Sun)
The mystery world lost one of its most towering and beloved figures on July 4 when Evan Hunter, better known to millions by the pseudonym Ed McBain, passed away.

Oprah Receives Freedom Award (BBC)
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has been named as one of the recipients of the National Civil Rights Museum's prestigious Freedom Award.

London 7/7 On A Day Like This, Don't Forget About Mission Control [TVNewser]
CNN co-anchors Miles O'Brien and Soledad O'Brien now officially receive the award for the longest continuous anchoring of the London terror attacks today. When 'American Morning' commenced at 7am, the duo didn't know they'd anchor for nine straight hours. But the network decided to keep them on the air until 4pm ET.

Compton Elected WHCA Prez
[FishbowlDC]
Election results out today from the White House Correspondents Association and ABC's Ann Compton won by a landslide—perhaps not surprising given that she's widely thought to be the nicest person ever to work in the West Wing press room. She took 94 out of the 139
ballots.

Novak: The Best Defense Is A Good Offense [FishbowlNY]
Robert Novak may be the most unpopular man in journalism today, but he does get the scoopage. Today he's reporting that Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist is shortly to announce his own resignation.

Our Ring Tones, Ourselves [FishbowlLA]
In a guest spot on the LAT Opinions page, Meghan Daum argues that the pop-song as cellphone ringtone phenom is a new example of the "irritating human impulse to assert our uniqueness," like the personalized license plate. I think that almost the opposite is true: ringtones are used to signify membership in a group.

We Heart Scands [UnBeige]
If we had money and/or a home, we'd be shopping at modernlink. Stopped in there yesterday during a mid-afternoon stroll (isn't that everyone's typical workday?) and were surprised to find a design collective hiding behind a pretty standard really storefront.

Did the NYT Just Rip Us Off? [Galleycat]
After reading the first three paragraphs of "With Covers, Publishers Take More Than Page From Rivals," I coded this table in an indignation-frenzy.

Efficiency Expert [mbToolbox]
What's your hourly rate? If I quoted you a project rate of $35 an hour, would you leap at it, or would you be insulted? Freelancers need to make a higher hourly rate than an employee-equivalent because we have to cover all of our overhead, from our office supplies and Internet connection to our health insurance and Social Security tax.
