Third Man Climbs Times Building and Is Arrested (NYT/City Room)
A man scaled the front of the New York Times building in Midtown Manhattan in the predawn darkness early this morning -- the third time in six weeks that a climber had scaled the one-year-old skyscraper, which is sheathed in thin ceramic rods. After staying on the building for about four hours, the man surrendered to police officers and was arrested around 5:20 a.m. NYDN: Unlike the two men who made it to the top of the 52-story structure June 5, David Malone went only to about the 11th floor early Wednesday morning. He hung a banner that featured a picture of terror kingpin Osama Bin Laden holding President Bush like a puppet.
Ladies' Home Journal Editor Out in Meredith Shake-up (Portfolio/Mixed Media)
Editorial director Mike Lafavore's departure -- or perhaps the forces responsible for that departure -- has triggered a larger shake-up at Meredith Corp., where struggling Ladies' Home Journal has a new editor and the publishing division has a new editorial reporting structure. At LHJ, editor-in-chief Diane Salvatore is stepping down and exiting the company, to be replaced by Parents editor Sally Lee. MIN: Salvatore was highly regarded and executed a major redesign (logo change, etc.) in March 2003 and a minor one this past February. But she will not be part of the Meredith of the future, with its greater emphasis on online and, on the business side, on corporate sales and integrated marketing. Mediaweek: Like other mature women's service magazines, the 125-year-old LHJ has struggled to maintain its size and relevance as more modern women's lifestyle titles like Real Simple and Martha Stewart Living have taken off. FishbowlNY: Full memo.
Downie and Bradlee Welcome 'Outsider' Brauchli to Post (E&P)
Current WaPo executive editor Leonard Downie Jr. and his predecessor, Ben Bradlee, both welcomed the appointment of Marcus Brauchli as top editor. But only Bradlee saw the significance of bringing in an outsider. "It means that they didn't have one home-grown who was ready," he said. "They didn't think they had a guy ready. If they got the right guy, that is good. It is as simple as that." WaPo: Brauchli introduced to Post newsroom.
The Chicago Tribune began informing staff Tuesday it will eliminate around 80 of its current 578 newsroom positions by the end of August and reduce the number of pages it publishes by 13 percent to 14 percent each week. There also will be a reduction of jobs in other Chicago Tribune departments, but that number was not immediately available. A paper spokesman declined comment.
Fox Business Adds Journal Columnist Mossberg (NYT)
The Fox Business Network and The Wall Street Journal, two siblings in the News Corporation, are contractually restricted in what resources they can share. But they took another step toward family unity on Tuesday by announcing that the personal technology columnist Walt Mossberg would be a regular contributor to the upstart cable channel.
Ted Koppel Signs on for BBC Gig (Variety)
Veteran TV journalist Ted Koppel has been named a contributing analyst for the BBC. Koppel, who's been making in-depth documentaries for Discovery Channel since he left ABC News in 2005, will appear on both BBC America and BBC World News, "offering his expertise on major international and national news stories, including the 2008 presidential election race," the broadcaster announced. TVNewser: It's a handshake deal, says Rome Hartman, executive producer of "BBC World News America." Koppel is expected to appear live at 7 and 10 each night of the party conventions in Denver and Minneapolis. After that, about once a month, he says.
Erik Torkells, editor of Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, has resigned in the face of a coming restructuring inside the Washington Post Co.-owned magazine. He's leaving next week. Torkells swept to power in a realignment that led to the ouster of most of founder Arthur Frommer's people from the magazine's masthead five years ago.
Google Push to Sell Ads On YouTube Hits Snags (WSJ)
Wringing ad revenue from YouTube is proving to be a challenge for Google. Although users of the popular video-sharing site view clips more than one billion times on most days, the site hasn't been as popular with big corporate advertisers. World-wide revenue from YouTube ads has fallen short of Google's expectations, and is likely to total about $200 million for the full year.
LiveNation Deal, Yahoo The Talk of Sun Valley (FishbowlLA)
The conference doesn't officially start until tomorrow, but hundreds of executives, moguls and their families were dribbling in yesterday. They're expecting 395 people on the hotel grounds, which is nearly double the number from years past. Already the few execs at the conference are buzzing about the LiveNation $70 million deal with Canadian rock band Nickelback, which was announced today. NYP: NBC's Zucker in demand for dealmaking at Sun Valley.
As Facebook has blossomed into a hot Internet hangout, its users have passed countless hours playing Scrabulous, which Scrabble's owners have tried to shut down. Electronic Arts said Monday it would try to legitimize the activity with the release this month of a Scrabble application, a Web program that Facebook members can plug into their profile pages.
African-American Network to Cover Democratic Convention -- But Not Republican (THR/Live Feed)
Given Barack Obama's historic run for the Oval Office, African American-themed cable network TV One plans to break from its usual entertainment programming to provide extensive coverage of the Democratic National Convention in August. But John McCain shouldn't expect the same treatment. The network doesn't plan any coverage of the Republican Convention.
NBC to Broadcast Every Olympic Sport (Mediaweek)
NBC will broadcast all of its Summer Olympics coverage in high definition and NBC and its sister cable networks will provide coverage of every one of the 34 Summer Olympics sports when the Games are televised for 17 days beginning Aug. 8. In addition, coverage of 25 sports will be streamed live at NBCOlympics.com during the course of the Games.
Jay Rosen: I give you Tree House Media Project and its blog. The tone is self help for angry journalists. Empower ex-newsroom people with tools to learn with. Enough with the ignorant griping, the site says: figure out the self-publishing puzzle and you can take matters into your own hands. It's like a band with a new sound. "No amount of bitching will prevent Yahoo from poaching our readers." Suck it up, news tribe.
Revolving Door Newsletter: Brauchli Named WaPo Editor While Quick & Simple, Golf For Women Fold (mediabistro.com)
The changing of the guard atop the Washington Post is complete. Publisher Katharine Weymouth moved faster than expected in naming former Wall Street Journal managing editor Marcus Brauchli as Len Downie's successor as executive editor. Brauchli's hire may very well signal a shift away from the local strategy pursued by Downie and Weymouth's uncle, Post Co. chief executive Donald Graham.
Mags and Newspapers Outsource Copyediting Work to India (BusinessWeek)
At Mindworks Global Media outside of New Delhi, 90 young men and women peer into their computers, editing copy, designing and laying out pages, and even reporting over the phone. Mindworks isn't a new publication. It's a company to which media groups in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. -- including the Miami Herald and South China Morning Post -- outsource work that journalists and copyeditors usually do.
