Cuts Needed, Tribune's Zell Says, 'So We Can Survive' (Baltimore Sun)
Real estate mogul Sam Zell, who took control of media giant Tribune Co. about six months ago, defended yesterday the staffing and page cuts under way at its newspapers as necessary in the worst advertising climate in decades. "I have a responsibility ... to keep this business alive when cash flow has eroded at a prodigious level," Zell said.
NYT Co. Misses Wall Street Forecast (AP)
The New York Times Co.'s second-quarter earnings fell 82 percent from a year ago, when it saw a one-time gain from the sale of a unit, but print advertising continued to shrink and pulled down operating income, the publisher said Wednesday. Net income dropped to $21.1 million, or 15 cents per share, from $118.4 million, or 82 cents per share, a year ago.

Amy Peohler Not Actually in Office Spin-off (NYO)
Amy Poehler is ditching SNL to star in a new NBC comedy that will air alongside The Office, and will be produced by Greg Daniels, the creator of America's version of The Office. But, it's not actually the Office spin-off that NBC has been gabbing about since their announcement in April.
Blogger Showdown at Brainstorm Tech Conference (Fortune/Techland)
The Brainstorm Tech conference kicked off Monday night, moderator and Fortune senior writer Adam Lashinsky discussed the competitiveness of the blogosphere with Om Malik of Gigaom.com, Kara Swisher of the WSJ's AllThingsD.com, and Robert Scoble of Scobleizer.com. He asked the trio what made their sites unique, which quickly devolved into a trash-talking session.
