sirius-xm-merger.jpgXM in the Red on Eve of Sirius Merger (Variety)
Red ink is flowing at XM Satellite Radio on the eve of its proposed merger with Sirius Satellite Radio as expenses grew faster than revenue during the third quarter. Washington, D.C.-based XM saw losses for the quarter ended Sept. 30 widen to $145.4 million from $85.5 million a year earlier.

YouTube Can't Filter Two Sets of Critics (Hollywood Reporter)
Matthew Belloni: It's hardly shocking that YouTube's legal foes are criticizing last week's announcement of a long-promised filter system for copyrighted videos. More surprising is the skepticism offered by the other side of the debate — the proponents of "fair use" who say YouTube's video identification system goes too far.

Gray Hair Will Mean Parity for Female TV Anchors (Allentown Morning Call)
Nichola Gutgold: Do we hold women to a double standard of beauty in television news and perhaps in other industries as well? Will there ever be a gray, maybe even thinning gray-haired woman anchoring the news? Why do we insist that women stay youthful looking and allow men to become "distinguished" with gray hair and receding hairlines?

Another Time Inc. Veteran Leaves (AdAge)
Another long-serving executive is departing Time Inc.: Mike Klingensmith, exec VP since June 2001 and a 30-year veteran, has decided to leave early next year, according to a staff memo circulated today by Chairman-CEO Ann S. Moore.

Ex-Dennis Chief Lands at CNET (WWD)
Former Dennis Publishing chief executive officer Stephen Colvin has landed at CNET Networks as executive vice president. Colvin will have responsibility for properties including GameSpot.com, TV.com, MP3.com, FilmSpot, and UrbanBaby.

Everything You Need to Know About the TV Writers Strike (Radar)
What's the deal with this writers' strike you've been hearing about? Glad you asked. Set your TiVos, reorder your Netflix queues, and let us explain why you should care what happens. Reading this will be good practice for when books, reality television, and masturbation — to HGTV — are all you have left to fill those empty hours.
