Sun Sentinel to Cut 58 Jobs (FishbowlLA)
FishbowlLA has received an email from a Sun Sentinel staffer who says 58 jobs will be cut from the Sam Zell-Tribune Company paper. "We just got word from the editor today, that 20 percent of the Sun Sentinel editorial staff will be laid off. Meaning, about 58 jobs will be cut. So far, 15 or so have already volunteered to take the separation package."

The Los Angeles Times plans to cut 250 positions, including 150 jobs in the print and online news departments, amid a continuing industrywide slump in ad sales, the paper's editor said Wednesday. Problem is: Weymouth's on vacation all this week, as her assistant informed me yesterday. But now I've learned that the announcement will be taking place early next week -- most likely Monday or Tuesday -- according to a Post source.

Rush Limbaugh's Big Payday (NYT)
Talk was never cheap for Rush Limbaugh, but now it is getting a lot more expensive. The A.M. radio host will be paid about $400 million to continue serving up his daily dose of conservative patter through 2016. First Half Media M&A Activity Flat (Folio:)
Online media and technology, and marketing and interactive, remained the two "bright spots" in an otherwise "cloudy" media M&A market for the first half of 2008, according to the Jordan Edmiston Group's first half overview, released today. According to the report, the total number of media, information, marketing services and related technologies transactions reached 404, up 1.8 percent from 397 during the same period in 2007. Deal value, however, plummeted 64.8 percent.

Clay Felker, founder of New York, passed away Tuesday morning. At New York, which he started in 1968, the native Missourian championed the careers of many great journalists including his friend Tom Wolfe. Before founding New York, he worked at Life, Time, Esquire, and the New York Herald Tribune. New York: Kurt Andersen's obituary of Felker. NYT: Felker was credited with inventing a widely imitated formula for glossy weeklies. NYO: As far back as 2006, Forbes' James Brady was reporting that the legendary editor was ailing and had been moved to a nursing home. WaPo: Felker was an "editor of cool." Conde Nast's Big Titles Aren't Generating Ad Pages (NYP)
Conde Nast Publications, which last year managed to soar above the general industry malaise by posting a 5.41 percent jump in ad pages, is slumping in the first half of 2008. The three big titles -- Vogue, Glamour, and Vanity Fair -- are all flat to down in the first half, according to Media Industry Newsletter, and the outlook is dim for a second half recovery to bail them out.

CBS Evening News Wins Murrow for Best Evening Newscast (TVNewser)
The CBS Evening News With Katie Couric won the Edward R. Murrow award for Best Newscast. CBS News won four awards in total, bested by ABC News which won six, including one for Overall Excellence. NBC News won one. CBS News also took home an award for best Web site, while ABC News won for spot news coverage of the Minneapolis bridge collapse.
