Position Summary
This position has primary responsibility for overseeing a broad range of public programs and events designed to raise Pratt’s public visibility by connecting the Institute to relevant constituents and communities locally and globally and to showcase Pratt talent and expertise to a broad audience. The Director’s work will be divided into two areas of focus: 1) the development, organization, and presentation of original programming; and 2) the management of the team that handles logistical and technical aspects of larger public events held in the two major event venues on campus.
Job Responsibilities
Public Programs
Conceive and curate high-profile public programs that maximize Pratt Institute’s leadership in areas related to its mission, academic strengths, brand messaging, and strategic priorities
Consult with campus academic and administrative leaders to explore ideas for each programming season that offer the greatest relevance and potential impact for Pratt
Engage members of the Pratt and extended Pratt community as program participants, when appropriate, including faculty and staff, alumni, colleagues, industry professionals, and funders
Develop strategic and ad hoc partnerships with other institutions that further programmatic, participation, partnership, and visibility goals including but not limited to high-profile cultural and media organizations
Organize all aspects of curated programs, including speaker participation, venue, vendors and technical support, ticketing, and management of program staff and/or volunteers
Work with appropriate communications staff to develop a marketing and audience outreach plan, and to explore opportunities for related exposure in the press and Pratt’s in-house publications
Develop additional strategies to extend the life and audience reach for each program, including live webcasts, on-demand video, and social media
Implement and maintain an online ticketing system and oversee the Institute’s public events calendar
Manage an annual budget to execute and promote original programming
Develop and implement regular assessments to gauge program impact, including audience surveys and quantitative analyses of reach and awareness
Secure in-kind media partners and program sponsorship revenue in close collaboration with the media relations and corporate relations staff when appropriate
Coordinate with Pratt fundraising and alumni relations staff on any special receptions or dinners organized in conjunction with specific programs
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Campus Event Services
Manage in-house campus event services operation including management of space reservations and key logistics for approximately 150 events annually
Supervise a full time Events Coordinator, a full time Event Services Technician, on-call event services staff, and other staff as needed
Oversee key event logistics including but not limited to the use of presentation systems, streaming/recording equipment, and stage technologies for major non-classroom events hosted on Pratt’s Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses
Maintain an internally accessible space reservation calendar for campus events and coordinate requests by clientele within the Pratt community
Coordinate logistical details for major campus events by consulting in advance with relevant internal services/offices and independent contractors, including safety and security, insurance, catering, and communications
Negotiate, manage, and expand revenue-generating campus space rentals by outside companies and organizations
Oversee the general upkeep, maintenance, installations, and upgrades of the auditorium’s event infrastructure including, but not limited to lighting, rigging, audiovisual systems, and recording equipment
Conduct annual performance reviews for full-time staff and work with staff members to set and review individual goals
Experience and Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
Experience: A minimum of 5-7 years professional experience in organizing public programs and managing a broad range of events is required. At least two years supervising full-time staff and managing budgets is required. A background in cultural events, specifically those related to design, visual arts, and/or architecture is a plus.
Skills: Candidates must be intellectually curious, dynamic, and organized with demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to plan, prioritize, delegate, and coordinate multiple projects concurrently under tight deadlines. Candidates must have a customer-service orientation, excellent oral and written communications skills, and a familiarity with online ticketing and event calendar systems. The ability to professionally manage staff, address all situations with a calm and professional demeanor, and negotiate contracts is essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively and productively with many entities across the Pratt campus.
Other: Availability to work evenings and weekends is required.
