After Largest US Beef Recall, Will Westland/Hallmark Talk?

The story continues to develop as a Humane Society video prompted the largest ever US beef recall this past weekend, but the offending company, Westland/Hallmark of Chino, CA has continued to remain silent.

The conversation, however, continues without them. Kim Essex, vice president of communications at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, told Bloomberg Television, “I am very confident in the safety of the beef supply.”

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States told the Associated Press, “I think we can’t say for sure one way or another, but it’s certainly a bad sign for the industry and the USDA to have been exposed for their failures in this single, random investigation.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, chairwoman of the House Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration Appropriations Subcommittee, said the video, “demonstrates just how far our food safety system has collapsed.”

The Associated Press and other outlets have reported that phone calls to Westland/Hallmark have not been returned.

After some digging, it seems the only communication the company has had with the press or general public is this statement on their website, which states in part that they have, “voluntarily suspended our operations pending the completion of the USDA investigation.”

One party who is remaining anonymous, but not silent: the person who shot the undercover footage for the Humane Society.
