Ogilvy, MSLGroup and More Make HRC’s ‘Most LGBT-Inclusive’ List

HRC

Human Rights Campaign, the civil rights organization perhaps best known for championing same-sex marriage  and making the equality symbol go viral, released its report naming the “Most LGBT-Inclusive Places to Work” this week.

The list is very inclusive indeed — and it contains a fair number of PR firms and holding companies:

  • The Ogilvy Group
  • MSLGroup
  • IPG (which includes Weber Shandwick, PMK*BNC, Rogers McCowan, Spong, etc.)
  • Publicis Healthcare Communications

How did these businesses qualify?

GOOD NEWS: The ‘Gays in the Military’ Debate Just Ended

navyseals

There are few people on Earth that people from all walks of life would collectively consider a “total badass.”

Much like a question on Family Feud, the top answer would be debated across popular football players and MMA fighters. Others, may wax nostalgic like Mike Tyson or Bruce Lee. Some may go the way of pop culture and argue for someone in “Game of Thrones” because they don’t get out much. And then, the real answers show up around numbers 5 through 7.

One of them will unquestionably be “a U.S. Marine,” “Special Forces,” “Green Berets,” or my personal fave, a U.S. Navy SEAL. No debate. No reservation. Just a simple “yup” does the trick, thank you kindly.

So, what if I told you there is a SEAL…who is openly gay? Did you just bump into a glass wall throwing papers up in the air because yeah, that happened.

Neil Patrick Harris: ‘A Kiss from Burt Reynolds Made Me Gay’

Neil-Patrick-Harris_Burt-Reynolds

It’s not like a kiss from a 70s sex symbol is as contagious as Ebola, but if you ask the new host of the Oscars, Neil Patrick Harris knew he was gay following a kiss from Burt Reynolds.

Somewhere Dom DeLuise is shouting at Sally Field (they’re both of Smokey and the Bandit fame for all you young’uns out there) saying, “Girl, I know the feeling.”

That’s So Raven: She’s Not Gay or African-American, and She Could Care Less

raven cosbyShe was born Raven-Symoné Christina Pearman, and when she took over on The Cosby Show (arguably after the shark had been jumped), America had a new sweetheart.

Just look at her!

Following her stint with Dr. Cosby, she hung out with Mr. Cooper before leaving TV to focus on her singing career. After that petered out, she returned to the Disney Channel for a variety of things including, of course, ‘That’s So Raven.’

Lately, she has been a little enigmatic about being so Raven…until she appeared on Oprah and refused to be labeled as anything except “human.”

ESPN Gets the Memo on America’s Disinterest in Michael Sam’s Showering Habits

ESPN Michael Sam

We wanted to look the other way too.

ICYMI: The St. Louis Rams drafted a gay guy in the NFL draft this year. Many have discussed this fact. We blogged about it. Everyone is watching it.

However, most of us are also over it.

Michael Sam showed true courage, walked over a line, and took a stand for the LGBT community. And while everyone with a pulse and a non-blackened heart applauded him for that move then, we have all stopped clapping.

Why? It’s old news. ESPN, however, thought a story about Sam’s showering habits in the Rams’ locker room was necessary. A day later, they apologized because social media blew up.

Grammatical Ignorance Considered Support for Gay Rights in Utah

Inigo-Montoya-WORD-MEANS

I love a good turn of phrase. Much of the time, one can be achieved via the mastery of a word/figure of speech — like these three, for example:

Homograph (n.) – Words that have the same spelling, but different pronunciations and meanings.

Homonym (n.) – Words that have the same spelling and same pronunciation, but different meanings.

Homophone (n.) – Words that have the same pronunciation, but different spelling and different meanings.

That last one is tricky because it reminds narrow-minded people of a word that no one uses correctly: HomophobeYou see, to have a ‘phobia,’ one must be legitimately afraid of something. People who are labeled with that term aren’t scared. They’re just idiots.

Kinda like this guy in Utah who fired a blogger for using that word. No, not that one, the other one: Homophone.

Damage Control, Sports Edition: Homophobic Vikings Coach Is Not Homophobic

Vikings

In case you missed it, now-former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe dragged the NFL into the 21st century kicking and screaming faster than you can say “Michael Sam” earlier this year by claiming that the team fired him not for his performance on the field but for his outspoken gay rights advocacy.

Kluwe hired a lawyer to help him make that point way back in January, and now the proverbial stuff is finally starting to hit the fan within the Vikings organization.

In short, Kluwe’s former special teams coach did indeed say that ““We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows.”

But his opinion doesn’t represent that of the larger organization. And he’s totes not homophobic in the first place.

CW’s Supernatural Gets Twitter Trolled in Miraculous Fashion for ‘Queer Baiting’

supernaturalThe CW (formerly known as the WB because initials are good) isn’t exactly known for “quality programming” lately. Back in its heyday, the network was populated with Gilmour Girls, Steve Harvey, the Wayans family (and Jamie Foxx), and Dawson’s Creek.

Today, not so much. One of its breakthrough-ish hits has been Supernatural

So, it’s the summer doldrums and the network is in need of an idea to resurrect its viewing audience and maintain its interest in the show. “Good audience. Good show. Good material. Eureka!”

And then, the network discovered the dark side of Twitter.

#PRFail: Watch America Teach FOX News About ‘Gender-Neutral’ Restrooms

fox news lgbt bathrooms

Recently, Illinois State University created “Gender-Neutral Restrooms” to help serve the LGBT community. A nice move by the institution to be more accommodating; however, FOX News took a little umbrage with this.

Essentially, the re-labeling would change several of its single-stall “family” restrooms on campus as “all-gender” restrooms. No new toilets. No new seating. Just the sign, which takes a while to get used to viewing. Here’s the initial report of the news…and then the unfortunate #PRFail follow-up after the jump.

(NOTE: FOX News anchor Heather Nauert incorrectly says the university is Indiana State.)

Can We Talk? Joan Rivers Calls President ‘Gay,’ First Lady ‘a Tranny’

usa-obama

For more than 50 years, Joan Rivers has been considered the female Don Rickles — a compliment of the highest order. She has insulted everyone with wit, humor, and dazzling banter. However, that was the younger Joan Rivers. Today, she’s not so much funny, as just a fake plastic individual in Hollywood that doesn’t know when to give it up.

And now, the octogenarian comedienne may have just told her last joke and discussed her last arrest with the “Fashion Police.” Why? You don’t get to call the President of the United States “gay.” Moreover, his wife a “tranny.” Yeah, not even plastic surgery will save you from this one, Joan.
