Damage Control, Sports Edition: Homophobic Vikings Coach Is Not Homophobic

Vikings

In case you missed it, now-former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe dragged the NFL into the 21st century kicking and screaming faster than you can say “Michael Sam” earlier this year by claiming that the team fired him not for his performance on the field but for his outspoken gay rights advocacy.

Kluwe hired a lawyer to help him make that point way back in January, and now the proverbial stuff is finally starting to hit the fan within the Vikings organization.

In short, Kluwe’s former special teams coach did indeed say that ““We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows.”

But his opinion doesn’t represent that of the larger organization. And he’s totes not homophobic in the first place.

CW’s Supernatural Gets Twitter Trolled in Miraculous Fashion for ‘Queer Baiting’

supernaturalThe CW (formerly known as the WB because initials are good) isn’t exactly known for “quality programming” lately. Back in its heyday, the network was populated with Gilmour Girls, Steve Harvey, the Wayans family (and Jamie Foxx), and Dawson’s Creek.

Today, not so much. One of its breakthrough-ish hits has been Supernatural

So, it’s the summer doldrums and the network is in need of an idea to resurrect its viewing audience and maintain its interest in the show. “Good audience. Good show. Good material. Eureka!”

And then, the network discovered the dark side of Twitter.

#PRFail: Watch America Teach FOX News About ‘Gender-Neutral’ Restrooms

fox news lgbt bathrooms

Recently, Illinois State University created “Gender-Neutral Restrooms” to help serve the LGBT community. A nice move by the institution to be more accommodating; however, FOX News took a little umbrage with this.

Essentially, the re-labeling would change several of its single-stall “family” restrooms on campus as “all-gender” restrooms. No new toilets. No new seating. Just the sign, which takes a while to get used to viewing. Here’s the initial report of the news…and then the unfortunate #PRFail follow-up after the jump.

(NOTE: FOX News anchor Heather Nauert incorrectly says the university is Indiana State.)

Can We Talk? Joan Rivers Calls President ‘Gay,’ First Lady ‘a Tranny’

usa-obama

For more than 50 years, Joan Rivers has been considered the female Don Rickles — a compliment of the highest order. She has insulted everyone with wit, humor, and dazzling banter. However, that was the younger Joan Rivers. Today, she’s not so much funny, as just a fake plastic individual in Hollywood that doesn’t know when to give it up.

And now, the octogenarian comedienne may have just told her last joke and discussed her last arrest with the “Fashion Police.” Why? You don’t get to call the President of the United States “gay.” Moreover, his wife a “tranny.” Yeah, not even plastic surgery will save you from this one, Joan.

Burger King Has a Gay Pride Whopper and It’s Just Like a Regular Whopper

Burger King, like the rest of us, is celebrating LGBT Pride Week. For this special occasion, one San Francisco BK restaurant has introduced a special Proud Whopper, a sandwich wrapped in a rainbow of bright colors. But when you unwrap it, inside, all you’ll find is a regular old Whopper.

What gives?

Well, the company says that’s kind of the point.

‘Homophobia’ and 10 Other Words the Media (and Everyone Else) Abuses

We TV viewers have recently been treated to Jenny McCarthy vaping on her eCigarette, talking about (her betrothed) Donnie Wahlberg’s behind, and trying to resurrect her career during fun-and-yuks on “The View.” For the most part, adding her has been a positive move for the “jumped the shark” all-girl broadcast.

And then came this week.

On the show, she attempted to joke about the rumors that Jennifer Lopez’s boyfriend Casper Smart had been accused of cheating on her with a transgender bikini model. And then she tweeted this…

jenny mccarthy tweet

While the humor was obviously in poor taste, the word used to attack her made the AP-Nazi in me freak out completely: Transphobic. Why? It reveals a systemic media tendency to misuse and abuse certain words. Repeatedly.

More for my fellow grammarians and logophiles after the jump… Read more

The New York Times Embraces AP-Style, Invents New Way to Call a Congressman ‘Gay’

aaron schock 2Meet U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R – IL).

When he is not enjoying the collective sub-10 percent approval rating the rest of his cronies earned on Capitol Hill, apparently he enjoys showing off his abs. Hell, they’re not even my abs, and I would enjoy showing those things off.

Anywho, for those not in the know, one of the most widely embraced assumptions and worst-kept secrets is Schock’s sexual orientation.

The reasons are after the jump, but the reason for this #PRFail is how the The New York Times has decided to try (yet again) to lure him out by creating a “colorful” new form of labeling.

Why Are There No Openly Gay Fortune 500 CEOs?

shutterstock_178464512

Claire Cain Miller of The New York Times asked a very important question this morning: how did professional football–the very epitome of a traditional industry averse to change–embrace an openly gay personality before corporate America?

Her point is that, despite widely-accepted rumors about certain executives at certain tech companies, not one of the nation’s 1,000 biggest businesses has an openly gay CEO.

We asked Howard Bragman, Chairman of Fifteen Minutes PRwho happens to represent Michael Sam–for his take on the issue.

Michael Sam’s Kiss Causes Dallas Show to Make National News

ktxdSee, that’s the problem with morning shows.

You get a bunch of people sitting around a table to focus on one subject. The problem with that dynamic is each person has their point of view and really don’t appreciate being put on blast for having said opinion. Sure, certain opinions may not be as popular as others, but don’t we all have a right — and a reason — to voice them?

This question was put on public display yesterday on Dallas’ own KTXD-TV 47 (London Broadcasting) and its morning staple “The Broadcast.” Yesterday, the quartet (seated from left to right) of Courtney Kerr (if you watch Bravo, that Courtney Kerr), Amy Kushnir (the woman making a dash for some fresh sanity), Suzie Humphreys, and Lisa Pinero, got into a heated conversation about Michael Sam and his much publicized, celebratory kiss on ESPN.

Annnnd that’s when Amy Kushnir excused herself from the set.  Read more

The Weather Channel Picked a Twitter Fight with the Wrong Texan Yesterday

BurnsVSWeatherChannel

Know your city. Be proud of your city…or pay the consequences, y’all!

Ah yes. Things really are bigger in my beloved Lone Star State, including the Twitter fights. Oh, and the bravado of ancillary city council representatives.

Now, if you know anything about North Texas, D/FW, or what a radio marketer in the 70s called “The Metroplex”, you may be familiar with the sibling rivalry between the two cities separated by a 20 minute drive on the freeway. Dallas and Fort Worth have two distinctively different cultures–both are very Texas, but each has its own conflicts. One of the largest is Fort Worth, consistently known as the rubenesque, butt-ugly, red-headed, buck-toothed stepchild of Dallas.

Even the Weather Channel thinks that way–and one guy in Fort Worth was mad as hell, as wasn’t gonna’ take it any more.
