Wal-Mart Backs Down: Too Little, Too Late?We wrote briefly yesterday about Wal-Mart re-claiming a large medical settlement from Debbie Shank, a former employee who suffered brain-damage and other injuries after being hit by a truck on the job several years ago. Not surprisingly, this caused quite an uproar, notably from MNSBC's Keith Olbermann, who promised to blast the company every night on his show until they gave the money back. Well, yesterday they did just that. Michael Bush at Advertising Age has the official, updated statement from David Tovar, senior director of media relations at Wal-Mart. Meanwhile, Jeff Jarvis has some strong opinions on the situation: Even the PR company, Edelman, fails to realize that this is bringing them down - who'd want to trust them after they keep throwing themselves on swords for Wal-Mart and who'd want to hire them given Wal-Mart's horrid reputation - and they'd be better off resigning the account, no matter what it's worth. We have no idea how much the Wal-Mart account brings in for Edelman, but we can imagine it's a hefty sum. Email This Post |
