CIPR Says PR Pros Shouldn’t Be Editing Wikipedia

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), the U.K.’s professional association for PR pros, has issued guidance for the industry that states PR pros shouldn’t edit Wikipedia entries where there is a conflict of interest. Instead, they should suggest those edits to Wikipedia editors.

The guidance is an ongoing work-in-progress, with further changes and enhancements expected as time goes on.

Bell Pottinger got into trouble back in December for admitting on secret video footage that they alter Wikipedia entries, among other “dark arts.”

Ann Curry Bids a Tearful Farewell to ‘Today’

There were rumors yesterday evening that this news would be coming today, but it didn’t make watching it any easier.

Ann Curry bid a tearful farewell to the Today show this morning, expressing her love for the viewers, her colleagues, and the behind-the-scenes players on the show.

There had been speculation over the past week or so that she would be leaving the show, possibly with a big payday. During her announcement, Curry said she’d be working on big stories, “the work that most of us got into journalism to do,” which will be broadcast across NBC’s news programs. NBC News president Steve Capus went into further detail about the types of stories Curry would be covering: “humanitarian” stories both here and abroad.

UPDATED: CNN, Fox Issue Statements After Incorrect SCOTUS Ruling Reported

Zoinks! Both Fox and CNN, in a rush to report this morning’s historic Supreme Court health care ruling, told everyone the exact wrong thing. That’s embarrassing.

Fox corrected itself on the air after seeing news on the SCOTUSblog that contradicted their initial statement that the health care law had been ruled unconstitutional. EVP of news for Fox News Michael Clemente has put out a statement about the gaffe that includes a poke at “one other cable network.” This statement is after the jump and gets the side eye.

CNN amended its reporting on air as well. They’ve also sent out an email to correct their previous “Breaking News” email alert and issued a statement, which we’ve also got after the jump.

Things Girls Love: Molecular Biology, Polymer Engineering and, You Know, Lipstick

How do you get girls interested in careers in science? By demonstrating the world-altering effects and fascinating subject matter those careers often deal with…or by wooing them with things girls totally love, like lipstick, nail polish, and being gawked at by guys? The European Union went with the latter. And it did not go over well.

Louis CK Stands Up To Convention

Standup comedians such as Louis CK live and die by public relations every time they speak into a microphone. The first rule in standup comedy states that it’s more important to be liked by the audience than to have them think you’re funny. People are loyal and forgiving with people they like. Funny comes and goes, like indigestion.

Louis CK, like everyone else, feels like he’s being exploited by the freaking entertainment industry and he’s had enough of this crap. So he’s cut out the middleman and is selling tickets to his next tour exclusively on his site.

Having a job is important, but having the right job is equally important. The PR industry is filled with firms large, small, and everywhere in between. Moreover, they’re working with different clients, are staffed with people that have varying priorities, and have created a unique style that makes finding the right firm kind of like finding the right boyfriend or girlfriend. Do you have things in common? Are you heading in the same direction? Do you both like watching Bravo reality shows and sports?

Oh… yeah… right. PR jobs. Gotta find the right firm. How do you do that? Start at the start.

“Looking for a job should be a job,” says Margarita Miranda-Abate, SVP of the consumer lifestyle practice at Kaplow. “Why are you not happy where you are? What’s not fulfilling you? You should know why you’re making the switch.” In other words, take some time for introspection to determine what you’d like to do. Having a good grasp of what the goal is will make achieving it possible.
