From October 12 through 14, Dell World 2011 will host IT decisionmakers at an inaugural conference in Austin, TX aimed at this niche group. While some conferences, tech-specific or otherwise, tout their colossalness with attendance figures in the tens of thousands, this conference is purposely staying small.
“This is going to get specific,” said Russell Fujioka, VP of marketing for Dell’s public and large enterprise area. He told us today that the conference is intentionally capping attendance at about 1,200. “Anyone who can attend is going to see leaders in proximity that they’ve never seen before,” he added.
Laser-targeting this group for this event is one of the attractions.
Attendees will be a mixture of IT pros directly involved in the tech side of things and C-level execs, including CIOs and in some cases CEOs, who are involved with the business side. Discussion will focus on “Unlocking Innovation in the Virtual Era,” areas like cloud computing. Speakers include Dell CEO Michael Dell, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer, and Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini.
Questions about investing in virtualization, security issues, and storage will be discussed with a look to the present and years into the future. According to Fujioka, “it doesn’t work if you try to mix” topics of discussion across all of computing.
In addition to the IT audience, Dell is catering to analysts and press. They will be invited to all of the keynotes and many of the other agenda items that Dell World has on tap. That sort of access is one of the ways Dell is demonstrating the transformation of the company onto a more successful path.
“It will tell a better story than we can ever tell,” Fujioka said. “It’s very open and we hope more and more people feel the reality of it, our commitment to getting this transformation done.”
