Fillion’s Casual Comment Sparks ‘Firefly’ Frenzy

Still cursing their beloved series’ 2003 cancelation, Firefly fans have launched a grassroots campaign to help former leading man Nathan Fillion obtain its rights.

Fillion — Capt. Mal Reynolds on Firefly, and currently the star of ABC’s Castle — seemed to be making nothing more than a casual comment when he told Entertainment Weekly what he’d do with $300 million in Lotto winnings: “[B]uy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.”

Fillion really should know better.

Notorious for their dedication/obsession, fans of the Joss Whedon-created series immediately launched a HelpNathanBuyFirefly.com website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed campaigning to continue the show without 20th Century Fox. (And, at least at this point, without Whedon.)

Considering that Firefly‘s been picked up for syndication by the Science Channel — the two-hour pilot airs March 6 – selling its rights is likely of little interest to Fox.

But those fans really are an adamant bunch. Postcard campaigns, online chatroom gatherings and other early-social media efforts to save their show may not have panned out (it lasted only only one season), but did result in a full-length feature, 2005′s Serenity, and that whole Browncoats: Redemption “fan-film for charity” business.

The series, by the way, is a sci-fi Western hybrid that revolves around a band of galaxy-trekking renegades aboard a small spacecraft.
