NYT’s Carr and Fox PR: Going on the Record

As we continue to monitor the reactions and responses to the New York Times’ story by David Carr on Fox PR, we thought we’d reach out to one of the few reporters quoted in Carr’s story, NPR media reporter David Folkenflik.

As Carr explained, Folkenflik “ended up on the outs with Fox News in 2001,” after a story he wrote about how, “Fox’s Geraldo Rivera had not been at the site of an incident of friendly fire in Afghanistan as he had told viewers.”

Things have since changed, as Folkenflik told Carr, “I currently have a perfectly good relationship with Fox News. I touch base with them all the time, and I write the good and bad news as it occurs.”

When asked about how he made the decision to go on the record for Carr’s story Folkenflik told PRNewser, “As a general rule, I comment on the record whenever I have something relevant to say, or some informed perspective to offer. As a reporter, I ask people to speak on the record with me all the time. Additionally, as someone who covers the media, I am specifically asking other journalists to be on the record – and, in fact, on tape! So it just seems like the right thing to do.”

Folkenflik went on to say, “But because I’m being as faithful as I can to the truth, I’m not too concerned how it affects my relationship with Fox News, or any other organization I cover, for that matter. I can’t pull my punches simply because I anticipate it might make my workday a little less unpleasant. I’m trying to serve our audience – and the best way I can figure out to do that is to focus on pursuing good stories, pinning down the facts and presenting them fairly on NPR’s shows and web site.”
