Ten months ago I interviewed Steve Martin from Nasty Little Man, Radiohead's agency of record about the impact of their pay-what-you-will album 'In Rainbows'. It seems like ancient history but a survey conducted jointly by the MCPS-PRS Alliance and peer-to-peer metrics company Big Champagne [PDF available here] suggests more people would rather steal the music on torrent sites than download it for free, or below market rate on Radiohead's site.
It's a good read and the authors admittedly can't reach a concrete conclusion as to the viability of this model for selling music. Factoring in ticket sales and the publicity bonanza, it's very clear to us what a great idea this was.
