Funny how the GoldieBlox/Beastie Boys spat turned everyone on the Internet into a legal wonk this week.
almost 100% inaccurate MT @Nero: GoldieBlox ripped off music, then launched a pre-emptive lawsuit, and now they’re playing the victim

Because you care, the weird one from Radiohead was #TeamBeastie:
I support the beasties here> I would be v upset too.!…OPEN LETTER FROM BEASTIE BOYS’ MIKE D & ADROCK TO GOLDIEBLOX http://t.co/gCyd8WKqIs”

Anyway, you may have heard that the company re-released the commercial without the offending song. Check out the new version and the statement:
We liked the old one better. But check out the “letter to the Beastie Boys” on the company’s blog:
When we made our parody version of your song, ‘Girls’, we did it with the best of intentions. We wanted to take a song we weren’t too proud of, and transform it into a powerful anthem for girls.
Our hearts sank last week when your lawyers called us with threats that we took very seriously. As a small company, we had no choice but to stand up for ourselves. We did so sincerely hoping we could come to a peaceful settlement with you.
Since actions speak louder than words, we have already removed the song from our video. In addition, we are ready to stop the lawsuit as long as this means we will no longer be under threat from your legal team.
Our take? This whole fiasco is a big PR win for the company. They already achieved viral video status, and this evolving story has brought even more attention to the brand.
If we were really cynical, we might even say the “pre-emptive” lawsuit was all about getting more attention. This Waxy post explores that idea:
It could be [a stunt]. Goldieblox founder and CEO Debra Sterling, despite her Stanford engineering background, spent seven years as a brand strategist and marketing director before starting Goldieblox. She definitely knows how to get publicity for her projects.
…there’s no question this lawsuit has raised the profile of Goldieblox, for better or worse
We’d like to give her the benefit of the doubt, but if it was a stunt it was masterfully planned.
