PRNewser Follow Up: Affect Names Internship Contest Winner

Back in February, we reported on Affect Strategiescompetitive search for a paid summer intern. Today, they announced the winner of “The New York Intern Project” —  Patrick Gotham, a graduating senior from Salisbury University in Maryland. Gotham is a business management and marketing student from New Jersey who’s never had an internship in PR.

“I knew I wanted to work in PR, advertising, and marketing, but I hadn’t had an internship in this area. I knew I’d need that to find a job,” he told us.

Gotham said he participated in the contest because he has experience that “doesn’t translate” on paper, making a traditional resumé submission less appealing. For example, as president of student government, he says part of his work was to promote the organization, and he launched a chapter of a fraternity, which he said was tantamount to “starting a brand from scratch.” (NBC also did their search for a social media intern online, so it looks like this is becoming more popular.)

Finally, we talked about the internship landscape. According to Gotham, while there are open positions, finding the right internship– and a paid one — is a tall order.

“There are internships out there, but finding the right one for you in the industry you want to go into is more difficult,” he said. He hopes to improve his writing, learn more about the industry, balance creativity with the needs of the clients, and learn how to “close the sale.”

The contest got nearly 100 entrants for the position that pays $5,000 plus a $5,000 NYC housing stipend.
