Hilary Swank Tells Jay Leno She’s No Longer Clueless About Chechnya

Hilary Swank made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote her movie New Year’s Eve, talk about the eggs she just bought, and tell the world that she now knows she should do her research before going to a suspected human rights violator’s birthday party.

You’ll recall, Swank got into trouble for making an appearance at an event for Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov (Jean Claude Van Damme and Seal a.k.a. Mr. Heidi Klum were also there). The Human Rights Foundation says they tried to warn her. Swank has apologized, donated the money, and has fired a few people over the issue. Her PR firm, 42West dumped her because of it.

Last night, Swank continued to explain, with help from Leno who tossed her a few softballs and made up some excuse about celebrities being dopes and just getting on planes when they’re told to.

42West Dumps Hilary Swank

Entertainment Weekly reports that 42West has dumped one of its celebrity clients, Hilary Swank, over a crisis response disagreement.

Hilary Swank has been catching major heat over her October 5 appearance at a party for Chechen president and alleged baddie Ramzan Kadyrov. He’s accused by human rights watchers of torture, kidnapping, and other atrocities. During her appearance, Swank said Kadyrov’s government has a ”passion to make peace and to make something beautiful.”

Heidi Klum’s hubby Seal and Jean-Claude Van Damme also went to the party.

It’s been reported that Hilary Swank did some dumping of her own, getting rid of the staff that booked the gig.

Oscar-Worthy Drama at 42West

The Hollywood Reporter has a big feature about the hidden/not-so-hidden tensions within the top ranks of 42West. The firm, which has deep roots in the film industry and played a key role in a number of Oscar nominees including last year’s winner The Hurt Locker, is in the midst of a break-up; three of the agencies partners are in the process of buying out the fourth, Cynthia Swartz, co-head of the entertainment marketing group. She plans to start her own shop.

For anyone wanting to venture into the Hollywood PR business, the article is a history lesson of that sector of the industry, one that revolves around key players and agencies.

“In the heady days of the ’80s, Pat Kingsley established herself as the dominant personality among Hollywood’s legion of personal publicists, and PMK became a training ground for some of the industry’s most nimble practitioners,” the story says.

Even if you’re not in the entertainment PR space, it’s an interesting read. Check it out here.

A Look at Just Jared’s Business and Deadspin’s Dong Shots

Two big profiles of A-list bloggers hit this week, The New York Times Style section piece about Just Jared (Jared Eng), and GQ‘s look at Deadspin’s A.J. Daulerio, titled “The Worldwide Leader in Dong Shots,” after Daulerio’s dogged quest of pics of Brett Favre’s penis.

Though the celebrity and sports beats often collide, the approach of these two monster traffic generators is quite different.  Eng is the publicist’s best friend, while Daulerio is portrayed as happy to bite any hand that feeds, without confirmation of a given scandal.
