Burson-Marsteller Suffers Backlash Over Tunisian Government Contract

Someone who was employed by Burson-Marsteller in 2011 made a very ill-advised statement.

That was the primary conclusion drawn from 5W PR founder Ronn Torossian’s Friday New York Observer op-ed, which ran under the URL “the Muslim Brotherhood’s new PR agency rejects Israel” and led to inflammatory headlines like this one from Arutz Sheva:

To clarify, the word “boycott” means “a punitive ban that forbids relations with certain groups, cooperation with a policy, or the handling of goods [produced by that group].” On its website, the publication ran with the more accurate “U.S. PR Giant Refuses Israel as a Client, Works for Brotherhood.

Damage done, though.

  • Cohn & Wolfe opened a new, wholly-owned office in Bangkok, Thailand in order to “offer full coverage across Southeast Asia in advance of the much-anticipated official formation of the ASEAN Economic Community”. Doug Buemi, vice chairman and regional director for Asia Pacific, will lead the office, which will focus on digital and social media for both consumer and B2B clients.

Shake Weight has chosen 5W PR for media relations, celebrity outreach, and other PR services. The device promises results when used six minutes per day.

The Rothman Institute, an orthopedic practice in Philadelphia, has selected Maven Communications for an internal PR program that will focus on employee and patient referrals.

Ellerman House, a hotel located in Cape Town, South Africa, has chosen Imagine Communications as its U.S. PR firm. Ellerman House was first built as a home for Sir John Ellerman and houses a private art collection.

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith has chosen Centurion Strategies for PR services. Smith has been a pro football player for eight seasons and has competed in the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl. He also recently ran into some trouble over a case dating back to 2008.

The Latin Recording Academy has chosen Rogers & Cowan as its AOR for the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, taking place November 10. Work will include media relations and event support. [via PRWeek]

Hawker Beechcraft Corporation has chosen Ruder Finn for outreach in China. The firm will be working with the business aircraft company’s U.S. and China teams on media outreach, marketing and branding, sponsorship opportunities, and more.

MSLGroup has won a €2.3 million, 15-month contract with Invest in France, The Holmes Report says. Ogilvy PR was the incumbent agency. Work will be international in nature, focused on some of the markets where MSLGroup has made acquisitions like Brazil and China.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has chosen Ogilvy PR for its “Dating Matters” campaign, focused on promoting healthy relationships and preventing teen dating violence in at-risk urban communities. Once the campaign has rolled out, its effectiveness will be determined and the campaign could grow geographically. Ogilvy Washington is handling the account.

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) has chosen Crosby Marketing Communications for a new website for its clothing and household goods donation services.  The firm will also handle online promotions via social media and other channels.

Two healthcare companies — Virtual Health, a subscription service for those in assisted living facilities, and K2M, a medical device company — have chosen Zeno Group as their AOR. Both companies started working with the firm about a month ago. [via PRWeek]

The 2011 Texas Tennis Open, a WTA event taking place August 20 through 27 in North Texas, has chosen Zelo Public Relations as its AOR. The firm will manage press relations before and during the event.

PRWeek is reporting that BMC Software and Waggener Edstrom are parting ways. WE had been BMC’s AOR for five years. BMC has begun the search for a new firm. WE has chosen not to pitch the business.

MyRegistry.com, the gift registry service, has chosen 5W PR for services including media relations, events, and partnerships.

Unisys has selected Lewis PR as its U.S. corporate AOR after a competitive pitch. The firm has already begun work on a program that will bring awareness of the company’s thought leaders and its work solving IT issues for clients.

City of Hope, a research and treatment center for a variety of life-threatening diseases, has chosen Weber Shandwick as its AOR for cause marketing and PR programs. The firm will raise awareness for the center’s work.

RecycleBank, a company that gives deals and rewards to people who recycle and take other “green” measures, has chosen the Bateman Group for PR services including partnership, corporate, and consumer communications. Tyler Perry, a Bateman VP based in NY (ha!), will lead the account. Its first initiative is the “Green Your Home Challenge,” which is taking place this month. The news of the new client coincides with the opening of Bateman’s new offices in Brooklyn.
