Apple Releases iPlay Game Console…April Fools’!

Apple hasn’t demonstrated a terribly affable sense of humor when it comes to spoofs on its products or advertising, but that didn’t stop video game website IGN from taking an April Fools’ Day jab at the tech company’s iconic product marketing.

Riding the coattails of (rather sketchy) rumors that an Apple video game console may be in the works, IGN created this tongue-in-cheek spot for the fictional “iPlay”. The video actually starts with a voice-over from Apple’s own industrial designer, Jonathan Ive (granted, some of the words have been dubbed over, but once you hear that familiar voice, you’re clued in). Risky, but rewarding.

As many commenters have pointed out, the spot is actually quite believable…that is, until viewers learn that the only playable game on the iPlay is Angry Birds. From that point forward, the commercial dissolves into comically exaggerated camera angles and self-effacing monologues.

Given the expediency with which Apple’s legal team tends to get such spoofs taken down, we recommend taking a peak while you still can. Happy April Fools’ Day!

Will Bad Piggies Be as Addictive as Angry Birds?

Angry Birds is one of the most successful mobile game apps ever invented. More than 1 billion downloads across all digital platforms can attest to its global popularity.

Now Rovio Entertainment, the company behind Angry Birds, hopes to follow that success with Bad Piggies—a game that extends the brand by allowing the pigs, which were limited to target status in the first game, to seek revenge on their beaked assailants.

These must be exciting times for Rovio’s PR experts, but the act of creating a mobile video game app that connects with the public in a big way is a game in itself—a game worth millions and millions of dollars. Rovio’s PR team must be asking themselves what, exactly, causes some video games to resonate with the public while others disappear with little notice. Is it the challenge? The creative marketing campaigns? Could it be the quirkiness, characters and design? continued…

Forbes ‘Richest’ List: No More Social Media Moguls?

This week Forbes released the 30th anniversary edition of its “Forbes 400: The Richest People in America” issue, and the list’s top ten is only surprising for being so boring. Bill Gates? Check? Warren Buffett, The Koch brothers, and the Waltons? Check, check, check.

The only change to the top ten is the addition of Michael Bloomberg, who somehow made lots of money last year while giving New Yorkers an extended “this is why you’re fat” lecture. We are not shocked.

In fact, there’s only one real “richest people” development that interests us: a big decline in the rankings for social media executives. The biggest individual drop, of course, belongs to Mark Zuckerberg, who has probably been grinding the hell out of his teeth every night for the past six months despite his public displays of confidence.

But does this development signal the beginning of the end of the “social media mogul?”

Location-Based Marketing Extends Beyond Check-ins

“Location, location, location” have long been known as the three things that matter in property. A keynote speaker at the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International Digital Marketing Strategy conference (HSMAI) on Tuesday also talked about how important it can be for marketing.

Asif Khan, the Location Based Marketing Association (LBMA) founder and president, defined location marketing as “the integration of people, places, and media,” and explained that it’s more than check-ins, the latest deals, and Foursquare. He also pointed out that location-based marketing takes being at home into account, takes place on more than mobile devices, and is equally popular now with both genders.
