Kraft Foods Sides with PR: ‘It’s Not You, Ad Agencies. It’s Us.’

new kraft foods

Late last week, Kraft Foods announced it was parting ways with many of its advertising agencies. Seven of its 11 ad agencies were unceremoniously shown the door.

The company believes having that many chefs in the kitchen can be bad for cooking. That many agencies playing the game of ‘Telephone’ proves the theory of lost in translation. So, Kraft Foods decided to greatly reduce the white noise. The move to go less with advertising is an effort to align its brands “more strategically with the particular strengths of agencies on our roster.”

Here’s the thing: the company is keeping all 12 of its PR firms on retainer. Strategery!!

  • Mosi Bicycles chose DRIVEN PR as its agency of record. The California firm’s primary responsibility will be promoting the company’s new “vintage European-style” bike line. The release says the designs “are far from sacrificing beauty for quality”; unlike New York Citibike members, riders will know exactly who’s been sitting on their seat.

  • Stuntman PR will be the agency of record for Mexicue, a brand that started as a New York City food truck but will soon become a national chain thanks to investment from Ruby Tuesday’s founder Sandy Beall. Red-hot Mexican and down home barbeque sound like a more natural pair than peanut butter and jelly, but is Mexicue the greatest taco truck in New York? We’d like to see that debate go down in Sunset Park…

Denver-based DStreet will be PR AOR for nonprofit Comic Book Classroom, a group dedicated to increasing students’ interest in literature and the arts through comics. The group provides area schools with free comic-based materials, and DStreet will be responsible for both highlighting those efforts and promoting Denver’s version of Comic Con, which will donate money raised back to CBC so it can continue using comics to help kids get more out of the school experience.

The release notes that DStreet’s account lead is a proud geek and the event’s site tells us that it will feature guests like Adam West and Bruce Freaking Campbell. Since we assume Campbell still hangs out with Sam Raimi, we hope someone will take this opportunity to figure out what the hell happened to Spider-Man 3.

Twentieth Century Fox Selects H&K as AOR

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has selected Hill & Knowlton as its AOR, effective immediately. The firm will work alongside Twentieth Century Fox’s in-house team, working on corporate and consumer campaigns for film and television programming, acquisitions, and original productions on Blu-ray and DVD.

The company’s previous AOR, Bender/Helper Impact, served in that role for 17 years. They were not asked to pitch the business, but continue to represent other Fox divisions, according to Dean Bender, founding partner of the firm.

Other H&K entertainment clients include Blockbuster, Dolby (a recent addition to the firm’s roster), and THX.
