3 Tips for Breaking into Sports PR

Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most-watched event in the history of live television. After all the hype and chatter settles down, one fact remains: behind every team, brand, player and celebrity involved in the day’s events was a group of highly skilled (and well-paid) public relations experts.

In case you missed it, we recently spoke to three industry veterans who recounted their own experience and offered tips on how to score a great internship and launch a career in the big-stakes world of sports PR.

Here are three of the most important lessons we learned in the process.

1. Create a great portfolio

We all know that great PRs should also be great writers, but it’s easy to forget just how important one’s writing skills can be.

Mike Soltys, SVP of communications at ESPN, says “Writing samples are a big differentiator. A very small percentage of applicants have good writing samples to present beyond history term papers.”

Roll Call: Ron Sachs Communications Acquires Vicki Johnson Communications, The Glover Park Group Hires New Talent, and More

Longtime Atlanta Hawks vice president of public relations Arthur Triche has been fired. According to NewsOK, Triche had been with the Hawks since 1989 as the team’s top contact for media, and was a fixture in the Atlanta sports scene. On Wednesday a Hawks rep called Triche’s exit “a personnel decision” but did not release a statement on the move. (NewsOK)

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Walt Disney Co. veteran Vicki Johnson will be bringing her marketing and tourism strategies to Ron Sachs Communications, one of Florida’s top public relations firms. Sachs recently acquired Vicki Johnson Communications as part of a continued expansion across the state’s public and private sectors. Johnson founded her agency in 2009 after working with Disney for more than a decade. She will serve as Sachs’ senior vice president of Central Florida operations. (Orlando Sentinel)

The Glover Park Group (GPG), a nationally-recognized strategic communications and government relations firm, has announced that Sanuber Bilguvar Grohé and Elie Jacobs have joined the firm’s New York office as vice presidents in the Strategic Communications practice. Grohé and Jacobs are the latest additions to the firm’s fast-growing New York office. Drawing from their experience in managing high-profile, high-stakes corporate communications and public affairs programs, they will be instrumental in helping deepen the firm’s client relationships in New York.
