Tesla Hires Former Nissan PR Chief to Lead Comms and Marketing Efforts

Tesla-Model-SAt the end of last week, Elon Musk‘s award-winning, famously combative electric car company Tesla Motors gave the world another sign that it’s very serious…about corporate communications.

According to this Ecomento headline, the company “poached” Simon Sproule, who previously headed communications for Renault-Nissan, for the VP of comms and marketing position.

Why make this move? Primarily because, in the words of InsideEVsJay Cole, Sproule helped Renault-Nissan become “the runaway leader when it comes to selling pure electric cars”. Also: Mr. Musk has always been the company’s most visible spokesperson. And while he may be a genius, he is not known as the world’s greatest media relations guy.

But this isn’t the only big PR move Tesla has made so far in 2014.

Someone Pitched a ‘Woman-Proof Car’ and It Was Bad

What, you thought all British people were naturally hilarious? Here’s the offending (fictional) automobile, complete with “a swivel seat” and “extra-large bumpers.”

Because women can’t park or back up or avoid bumping into things. Got it. Oh, and the color is pink in order to “alert other road users; specifically males.”

It’s a sad sexist joke disguised as a pitch, but someone designed the graphic and wrote/distributed the release and answered the inevitable “what the hell is this nonsense?” responses.

Journey is AAA’s bimonthly magazine that covers travel destinations  both between states and internationally in a manner that appeals to residents of Washington and other Northwestern states. “We’re more of an experiential market than a luxury, high-end shopping audience,” explained editor-in-chief Rob Bhatt

He also stressed that his team is interested in travel-related PR pitches, especially about local destinations reachable by car, as well as chefs, restaurants and resorts in the Northwest. But, as always, publicists must show familiarity with the publication’s reader base. “There are certain angles that make sense for a Northwestern audience and others that don’t.”
