Study: Republicans Have 65 Percent of the Most Followed Congressional Twitter Accounts

Research conducted by Burson-Marsteller found that eight of ten most followed Congressional Twitter accounts are maintained by Republicans. Moreover, as the House of Representatives and 22 Senators face re-election, Republican Congress members are more likely than Democrats to have an election-focused account.

Republicans also top Democrats in the average number of followers for election-focused accounts with Republicans collecting 4,820 versus the Democrats 2,972. Seventy-two percent of Republican Congress members have Twitter accounts versus only 55 percent of Democrats.

John McCain (AZ), John Boehner (OH), and Jim DeMint (SC) are the most followed Congress members on Twitter. The two Democrats in the top ten are Claire McCaskill (MO) at number four and Barbara Boxer (CA) at number eight.

The entire B-M study after the jump.

Carly Fiorina Caught On Open Mic

Note to PR pros: when you’re on camera, don’t say anything inappropriate, even if the segment hasn’t started taping yet.

In this video shot yesterday, California GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina is caught making comments about Barbara Boxer‘s haircut, Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, and Fox News host Sean Hannity, reports TVNewser.

“It’s really surprising that on the first day of the general, Meg Whitman is going on Sean Hannity,” she commented to an off-screen aide. “I think it’s bizarre…I think it’s a very bad choice actually. You know how he is.”

Fiorina’s press secretary told CNN, “This was nothing but early morning small talk.” Nonetheless, it’s a bit surprising from Fiorina, who is not a small time candidate, and should be used to the media routine from her days as CEO of HP.

She tried to clarify the remarks with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News last night.

Democratic Operatives Launch Agency Trilogy Interactive

Three interactive shops — Blackrock Associates, Articulated Man, and Mayfield Strategy Group — have combined to form online communications and strategy agency Trilogy Interactive.

Brent Blackaby, co-founder of Blackrock Associates told PRNewser today, “as progressives are dealing with some challenges in the electoral landscape, combining resources under one roof seemed to make sense.”

“All of us have been working on projects for the last three or four years, this was sort of a natural next step,” he said.

The launch seems to be in part a response to the GOP improving their digital and social media strategy in recent years. Indeed, the press release announcing the agency said Democracts “must accelerate and innovate” to maintain their lead in online grassroots engagement and fundraising.

Trilogy’s client roster counts 22 Senators, including Barbara Boxer, Patrick Leahy, Chuck Schumer, and Dick Durbin. In addition, the agency has partners with experience from the Wesley Clark and John Kerry presidential campaigns.
