Jay-Z’s Newest Gig: Big-Name Sports Agent or Marketing Man?

Jay-ZYou may have heard something about Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter’s decision to expand his business empire into the world of sports management and PR. You may have also heard about the newly-founded Roc Nation Sports‘s first big win — swiping New York Yankees all-star Robinson Cano from Scott Boras, the most powerful agent in baseball. Makes for a nice press release, doesn’t it?

This is all well and good, but it raises a question: what, exactly, is Jay-Z’s role in this venture? Is he really a sports rep, or is he just doing his usual thing as master of promotional initiatives?

Something tells us that this latest story is closer to Carter’s relationship with the Brooklyn Nets than the traditional sports rep game. While the Nets paraded the rapper/mogul in front of any media outlet that would listen in 2012 (aka all of them), hyping his managerial skills and his participation in the team’s logo and jersey design, Jay-Z ‘s responsibilities within the organization are minimal. He owns a tiny share of the property, and the part he played in the Nets’ debut clearly had a lot more to do with getting press coverage than actively guiding operations.

(On a side note, we find it a little curious that Jay chose to slam the very media that fawned over him for “diminishing” his stake in the Nets.)

RIP to the Brooklyn Nets’ Amazing PR Twitter Feed

We are sad to report today, via various sources, that the nascent Brooklyn Nets PR department has (at least temporarily) abandoned its incredible Twitter account. Some speculate that the decision to “go in a different direction” on the social media front came after pretty much everyone on the Internet mocked truly amazing tweets like this one:

and this one:

and this one:

Yes, the account retweeted itself. Oh, and by the way, this announcement came after the team’s first game. They were 1-0.

The Nets communications department appears to have pushed PR manager Calder Hynes a little further away from the spotlight, though he still manages his personal feed. But why? Doesn’t everybody love humor? Didn’t you guys notice the thousands of shares and favorites on that first tweet? Most of the tweets weren’t even funny. They were just updates of individual games, stats and players’ statuses. You know, standard sports PR stuff.

Finally, can a team really be concerned about the public taking it more seriously when its roster includes Kris Humphries?

Confirmed: Here’s That Brooklyn Nets Logo We Mentioned

Last week, there was speculation about what the Brooklyn Nets logo looked like, but most were pretty sure it was something like the one Jay Z wore on a t-shirt days earlier.

Here they are officially (the other is after the jump). The logos were designed by Jay Z himself using, according to the press release, the “black and white color palette of the old New York subway signage system.” The shield is homage to the previous Nets logo. Of course, the “B” refers to “Brooklyn.” A couple of other versions of the “B” available here.

There’s also the “Hello Brooklyn” marketing campaign we talked about last week. The homepage now has an intro video you can check out here.

The Brooklyn Nets Have a New Logo

The Brooklyn Nets have sent out a news release announcing that the team’s new logo will be unveiled on Monday, April 30 during a press conference taking place across the street from the new Barclays Center. But it looks like an IT leaker and Jay Z, a team investor, may have already spilled the beans.

Jay Z appeared in concert wearing the t-shirt at left, which looks like the leaked image. But some say the image is doctored.

The team is also giving away hints on its homepage. You can catch a glimpse, along with the team hashtag, after the jump.
