Roll Call: Brunswick Group, VMS, ‘Town & Country,’ and More

Brunswick Group has hired Wall Street Journal reporter Stephen Power as director of the firm’s Washington D.C. office, effective August 15. Power had been with the Journal for 11 years, most recently covering the energy industry. Tripp Kyle has also joined the firm’s NY office as partner focusing on the financial services sector and alternative investment companies, like hedge funds. He was previously with Finsbury Group, where he helped build the NY practice and the alternative investment management practice.

Media intelligence company VMS has hired David Evans as SVP of news sales. He’ll be working with the company’s PR clients on sales management, business development, and other sales areas. He was previously VP and GM of Wolters Kluwer Financial Services.

Freeda Fawal-Farah has joined Town & Country as associate publisher of marketing, a position she most recently held at Harper’s Bazaar. She will be responsible for raising awareness of the magazine’s brand. [via Fishbowl NY]

PR, Marketing Leaders Also Top MediaGuardian List

Freud Communications' Matthew Freud is among those on the 'Guardian' media list.

The U.K.’s Guardian newspaper has published it’s top 100 in the media and there are some PR and communications pros taking spots on the list.

Max Clifford, the founder of Max Clifford Associates known for his work managing tabloid news and the PR for high-profile names like Simon Cowell, has moved up 10 spots to number 25. Matthew Freud, chairman of Freud Communications and husband to Rupert Murdoch’s daughter Elisabeth, is at number 31. And Alan Parker, the founder and chairman of powerful financial and corporate comms firm Brunswick Group, is in at number 65.

The top marketing and PR spot goes to Sir Martin Sorrell, WPP‘s CEO, coming in at number 8.

As we mentioned this morning, Mark Zuckerberg comes in at number one. Also in the top 10 are Rupert Murdoch, Steve Jobs, and the aforementioned Simon Cowell. For more of the marcomms leaders on the list, click here.

Abernathy Tops Mergermarket Ranking

Brunswick is working with AT&T on the T-Mobile USA deal, but Abernathy MacGregor tops the mergermarket ranking for deal value.

Abernathy MacGregor Group leads the pack for value of international deals in Q1 2011 according to the latest mergermarket League Tables. The firm worked on 16 deals worth $73.3 billion, putting it ahead of Brunswick Group, which came in at number two with 41 deals valued at $67.9 billion, and Sard Verbinnen, which handled 21 deals valued at about $64.4 billion. According to mergermarket, this is the first time since the rankings began in 2001 that Abernathy has topped the list.

And, The New York Times Dealbook blog notes that Brunswick is advising on the biggest deal of the quarter, AT&T’s purchase of T-Mobile USA. (Brunswick is working with AT&T while Kekst & Co is working with T-Mobile.)
