Nanci Ryder Shares ALS Diagnosis, Steps Down at BWR

Today, famed celebrity PR pro Nanci Ryder – co-founder of BWR and frequent “most powerful publicists in Hollywood” honoree — made an important announcement via The Hollywood Reporter: she has ALS and she will be stepping down from her role at the firm to devote herself fully to raising awareness of the condition.

This news is particularly relevant after the ALS and the PR industry itself won widespread acclaim for the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge this summer.

Reconstructing J. Lo

The Style section of The New York Times published a curious article about the second life of Jennifer Lopez. Her career started with the Fly Girls and made it to the media saturation point; she was making music, starring in movies, had a successful perfume, a clothing line, and was one half of the super-couple Bennifer.

After a few misses, like the stink bomb Gigli, and some time out of the spotlight, the article says J. Lo is back. Yippee and hooray. But strangely, the article frames her comeback as a construct; she’s back in a way that’s palatable, but a little tenuous.

Billings Up 12.6 Percent at WPP

WPP has released its 2010 preliminary results, reporting that billings increased 12.6 percent to $65.961 billion. Based on constant currency, revenue was up 5.6 percent, reflecting the weakness of the pound versus many other currencies. But reportable revenue was up 7.4 percent to £9.331 billion, or $15.158 billion, based on today’s exchange rates.

PR and public affairs was nine percent of revenue as a total percentage of the group, up 4.3 percent from 2009. Branding and identity and healthcare and specialist communications were 24.9 percent of revenue as a total percentage of the group, up five percent from the prior year. Hill & Knowlton, Cohn & Wolfe, Ogilvy PR, and Burson-Marsteller are among WPP’s firms.
