We caught up with Altimeter Group founder Charlene Li as she swung through town this week to promote her new book, Open Leadership: How Social Technology Can Transform the Way You Lead.

A former Forrester Research analyst, Li left the firm to start her own digital consultancy, and has worked with a number of large PR firms, including Ketchum, Edelman and Hill & Knowlton.

In her new book, she seeks to address a question that kept coming up over and over from executives: “How open do I need to be?”

Tech PR Executive Susan Etlinger Joins Altimeter Group

First on PRNewser: Susan Etlinger has joined analyst and consulting firm Altimeter Group. She was previously senior vice president at tech PR agency Horn Group.

Etlinger joins Altimeter Group as a consultant, where she will work with former Forrester analyst, Groundswell author and Altimeter Group founder Charlene Li in the Leadership and Management practice, focusing on “helping organizations adapt and thrive in a changing technology landscape.”

She will also work with Li to launch programs around her upcoming book Open Leadership.

“This is really a dream job for me,” Etlinger told PRNewser. “In this incredibly chaotic market, it’s critical to be able to have point of view both on what’s happening right now and the emerging trends that could affect future strategies.”

Altimeter consults to PR agencies Ketchum, Edelman and Horn Group as well as brands including Cisco Systems, HP and Microsoft. They’ve made waves by assembling an “all-star” team of analysts and consultants and have an interesting business model, in which they promote “open” research reports.

Instead of clients paying for research, as they do with firms such as Gartner of Forrester, Altimeter is giving away research for free, in hopes it will drum up new business and attention for the firm.

[Disclosure: This PRNewser previously worked at Horn Group.]

Year In Review: Five Important PR Innovations of 2009

We begin our 2009 Year In Review coverage with a list of five important innovations that made the biggest impact on the PR industry over the last year.

Click continued for the complete list. Coming soon in our continuing year in review coverage: agency trends, the top five pitches of 2009 and more…

1) Facebook Makes Changes to “Fan Pages”

Facebook’s changes to their “Fan Pages” in March — which are destinations set up on the social network by everyone from celebrities to large brands — was possibly the innovation that brought brands and marketers on to the social network en-masse, giving them a formal and better way to communicate. Perhaps the biggest change was that status updates from fan pages now appeared in user’s news feeds “more often,” wrote David Berkowitz in Advertising Age. This positioned brands in the same way as ones’ “friends” on the social network for the first time.

Interview: Stephanie Agresta, EVP, Global Director of Digital Strategy and Social Media, Porter Novelli

Stephanie Agresta joined Porter Novelli this past June, after more than 15 years in online marketing with brands including Microsoft, PepsiCo, iVillage, Barnes & Noble, Register.com and SpaFinder.

In addition to running her own consulting business, Agresta is known to many for hosting “The Techset” social media parties with PR 2.0 blogger Brian Solis. This is Agresta’s first agency gig, so we spoke with her about her first 90 days on the job (“It’s been extremely busy and very reflective for me of what’s happening in the industry.”), how her consulting work fits in with Porter Novelli (“…my work and all of my time is spent on Porter efforts.”) and her take on what should be handled by an agency and what should be handled internally when it comes to social media (“It really depends on what point in the process the brand is at.”)

You joined Porter Novelli in June as EVP and Global Director of Digital Strategy and Social Media. How have the first 90 days been?

The first 90 days have been very exciting.

Dachis Group Acquires HeadShift

Dachis Group, a “social business design” agency led by former Razorfish CEO Jeffrey Dachis, has acquired London-based social business consultancy Headshift Ltd. Dachis is moving quickly to expand, after launching with a team of “A-list” partners including former Forrester Analyst Peter Kim, former Nielsen Online VP of Measurement Science Kate Niederhoffer and Logic + Emotion blogger David Armano.

This is the second high profile move by a social focused agency in the past week. On August 27th, former Forrester analyst Charlene Li announced the additions Deb Schultz, and former Forrester analysts Ray Wang and Jeremiah Owyang to her recently formed Altimeter Group. Needless to say, Forrester is looking for replacements.
