Roll Call: APCO, Ruder Finn, The OutCast Agency, and More

James Acheson-Gray has joined APCO Worldwide as MD in London. He was most recently international MD at Grayling. Acheson-Gray steps in for Ed Walsh who is now MD for all of Europe. He has held the London position since 2009.

Paul Yang has been promoted to GM of Ruder Finn Beijing, replacing Leon Liu. Yang has been with the firm for nearly 10 years and served as head of the corporate practice between 2008 and 2011. He’ll report to Elan Shou, MD and SVP of Ruder Finn China. The firm has been building up its China presence in recent months, adding a new head of its arts and culture group, Shou in February, and new fashion clients.

Geri Ann Baptista

Geri Ann Baptista has joined Hill + Knowlton Strategies as a VP for Northwest operations. She’ll work across the corporate and tech practices in Seattle and Spokane, WA, reporting to the GM of H+K Strategies Northwest, Christiaan Brown. Baptista joins from Starbucks, where she was senior manager of corp comms in charge of CSR. She also spent 12 years as an attorney.

Matt Kovacs has joined consumer, lifestyle, and hospitality firm Blaze as EVP and GM. He’ll be focusing on new business and agency growth. Kovacs joins from Formula PR where he managed the sports and and entertainment division out of the L.A. office. He worked with Formula for a decade.

Christine Messina-Boyer has joined Widmeyer Communications as VP in the higher education practice group. Messina-Boyer has had a long career with colleges and universities, including as Muhlenberg College, where she was VP of PR, the first woman to hold that post. She’s also an adjunct professor at Lutheran College Consortium Washington Semester Program.

Roll Call: Kaplow, Ruder Finn, U of Akron, and More

Nick Charles has been named editor-in-chief at Kaplow, a new position at the firm. Charles will head up content and community strategy across platforms. He was previously the global head of content at Porter Novelli working with clients like Hewlett-Packer and Gillette.

Ruder Finn has partnered with Japan’s Kyodo Public Relations, the first PR firm to be listed on the Tokyo stock exchange. The two firms have worked together for about a decade. The two firms will exchange international resources. Kyodo PR will offer insight and services in Japan and Korea. Last month, Ruder Finn opened a new office in New Delhi.

North of Nine Communications, Burson-Marsteller‘s recently launched tech firm, has added audio communications company Plantronics to its roster. With a message of tech innovation and corporate leadership, the firm will execute a media campaign led by Mary Ritti, a partner at North of Nine, and Russell Castronovo, Plantronics’ director of global comms.

US Mortgage Corporation has chosen Rubenstein Public Relations for media relations surrounding the company’s home mortgage financing services.

Town Sports International, which runs 159 Sports Clubs in New York, Philly, Boston, and Washington D.C., has chosen Coyne PR as its AOR. The firm will work on both traditional and social media work. [via PRWeek]

GolinHarris has been selected as AOR to Rotary International. The firm will help Rotary International raise awareness of its cause initiative End Polio Now, which addresses the ongoing fight against the disease abroad. GH will also conduct outreach for the nonprofit’s other philanthropic efforts. The account will be handled out of the Los Angeles office by SVP Dan Zukowski.

Cookie Jar Entertainment, makers of the Caillou line of toys launching this Spring, has selected Child’s Play Communications for PR services. The firm, which specializes in PR targeting moms, will use its Team Mom blogger network to promote the line. According to Child’s Play president Stephanie Azzarone, the Team Mom network will “not only highlight features and benefits in their reviews, but also share their child’s personal experience with the product,  while typically including photos and often video of their children interacting with it.”

Social commerce site Kaboodle has selected The Morris + King Company as its AOR following a competitive review. Kaboodle is owned by Hearst, and provides a community of shoppers with discounts, suggested items, and other shopping info.  At left, one of the items currently on the Kaboodle site, a “bearded beanie.”

The GoNewark Sports & Entertainment Committee has hired MWW Group to promote the GoNewark HoopFest, which brings NCAA basketball to Brick City. The event takes place between March 23rd and 27th. The firm will promote the event as well as encourage ongoing tourism to the city of Newark.

Child’s Play Launches Party Program to Reach Moms

Child’s Play Communications, which specializes in outreach to moms, has launched House Partypalooza, a marketing program that enlists moms (“chosen based on their suitability for individual brands,” according to the launch release) to host events, invite other moms, and spread the word about different brands. Selected moms are given product samples, instructions, and other supplies to host the events, and in many cases there is a small stipend.

It all sounds very planned and manufactured, but Stephanie Azzarone, president of Child’s Play, says moms have freedom in the process.

“We provide guidelines and messaging and then let it go and they interpret it their own way,” she told PRNewser. Julie Livingston, director of new business development and accounts also says that “moms can post whatever they like on Facebook in response.”
