Apple’s ‘Made in USA’ Plan: Good PR, Bad Strategy or Both?

Apple CEO Tim Cook made the media rounds this morning to hype a major announcement: For the first time in well over a decade, Apple will be manufacturing a certain number of its products within the United States.

As cynics, we see this move as a blatant attempt to counter all the bad PR that Apple received over the Foxconn outsourcing/slave labor/suicide scandal (though we would note that this awful story didn’t really prevent anyone, least of all ourselves, from buying Apple products).

The fact that late CEO Steve Jobs supposedly denied a request for more domestic production from none other than President Obama strengthens this theory. As much as we’ve accepted outsourcing as a part of the modern business landscape, everyone loves to hear about good new jobs for Americans. So this is great PR, right?

Maybe–but investors hated it, and we have a feeling certain Apple advisers did too.

Shareholders Are Losing It Over High Executive Pay

The word on the street is that WPP head Sir Martin Sorrell is getting a huge pay raise, which could stir up controversy over executive pay. It’s an issue that’s rearing its head at a number of companies, particularly at banks. (Mediapost has info about executive pay at other holding companies.)

Add Anti-Hacking Efforts to Your Crisis Comms Plan

We learned about the hacking threat to banks a while ago, but now the threat is much more more widespread. Citibank was hacked in May (and waited a month to tell people), Sony Playstation was the victim of a hack job that could cost it $1 billion, PBS was hacked with a story that brought back both Tupac and Biggie, and Sega has announced a breach. Add to that, two big names in data breach — LulzSec and Anonymous — have issued a release saying that they’re joining forces to “attack any government or agency that ‘crosses their path.’”

LulzSec says that hackers will be targeting classified government information with this Operation Anti-Security, but judging from the companies have fallen victim, the group isn’t against going after anyone it has an issue with. The statement also encourages the use of the term “AntiSec” in any hack job and graffiti with that tag.

Businesses, brands, and organizations, we’ll say it again: Get your crisis comms plan ready.
