Stoli Goes All Out to Solidify LGBT Cred for Sochi Games

Unfortunately, most of the news about the Sochi Winter Games concerns either Vladimir Putin‘s insane security state or his decision to pass homophobic laws and tell gay athletes/visitors that they can “feel calm and at ease” as long as they “leave the children alone.”

When Dan Savage and others first called upon Westerners to boycott Russian vodka, Stolichnaya was understandably the first brand that came to mind. Stoli responded with pro-gay Facebook campaigns and interviews in which spokespeople reminded protesters that the product is actually filtered and processed in Latvia, because big difference.

Now the brand has taken the “we’re not Russian or anti-gay” campaign a bit further as the boycott continues courtesy of one House, M.D.

Stoli Vodka to LGBT Protestors: ‘We’re Not Really Russian, OK?’

Vladimir Putin hasn’t won too many friends in the Western world with his new anti-gay crusade. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sotchi will probably be just fine, and the International Olympic Committee is crossing its fingers and hoping that nobody raises too big a stink.

But all this negative coverage is bad PR for some classic Russian brands, especially Stolichnaya Vodka. But Stoli’s not really Russian, and now the brand is scrambling to downplay the connection.

Two 49ers Deny Making the ‘It Gets Better’ PSA in Which They Appear

The San Francisco 49ers, who happen to be playing in a certain football game this Sunday, earned a bit of bad press earlier in the week after cornerback Chris Culliver decided to let the world know that he “[doesn't] do the gay guys, man” and that any pro football players who happen to be gay should probably stay in the closet because the whole deal just totally weirds him out, girl. Trust!

Culliver then issued what may be the least effective damage control statement ever, saying that “The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel.”

You’d think the clip below–recorded as part of Dan Savage‘s “It Gets Better” anti-bullying PSA campaign for gay and lesbian youth–might help nip that problem in the bud, right?

No such luck: yesterday two of the very players who appear in the video denied ever making it.

Social Media Brings Bullying Issue to the Forefront

The power of social media to bring about change has been made evident once again with recent campaigns for the upcoming Weinstein Company documentary film Bully, which has spurred an online petition to the Motion Picture Association of America, a Twitter campaign and more than 400,000 views of the film’s trailer on YouTube.

The feature film is set to be released March 30. However, the film has an R rating for language. Change.org and a high school student have gathered more than 200,000 signatures on an online petition to the Motion Picture Association of America urging it to lower its rating to PG-13 so it can be seen by its target audience – older children and teens.
