Happy 140th Birthday Blue Jeans!

We couldn’t let today pass without honoring a staple of Americana that ranks alongside hot dogs, July Fourth and apple pie. Blue jeans were introduced to America on this day in 1873 by Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis, whose patented denim pants with copper rivets have become a symbol of everything that is celebrated in our culture.

Blue jeans are emblematic of everything American from the hard-nosed, can-do attitude of blue collar workers to sexy supermodels in cutoffs to rebellious rockers in ripped up Levis… and everything in between. The public loves blue jeans, and every generation since 1873 seems to have defined blue jeans in its own way.

Nominate Your Clients for the Webby Awards by Friday

The Webby AwardsHave you heard of the Webby Awards? No? Well then: established way back in 1995 when we still used a dial-up modem to access our Prodigy account, the awards were created by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences to honor creative individuals doing great work in the digital field: websites, online ads, videos and all other kinds of content. This year’s deadline for nominations is Friday.

Academy members include Harvey Weinstein, David Bowie and Martha Stewart, and past winners have been as diverse as Björk, YouTube, Stephen Colbert and, for some reason, Jimmy Fallon. Oh and yes, the Webbies were once known as “The Oscars of the Internet.”

This year for the first time, the awards include a suite of social categories to celebrate “the diversity of content, brands and people that use social media as a fundamental component of their identity and communication.”

Sound familiar? If you have a client (or firm) that created a particularly excellent content, marketing, or other social media project this year, it will only take a moment to nominate them. We have a feeling they would appreciate it. But make sure you do it by the deadline this Friday!

Kiss Hires Levine Communications Office

“Rock band Kiss hired Levine Communications Office for PR as it releases its first album in 11 years, Sonic Boom,” reports PRWeek‘s Kimberly Maul.

The agency has been in the PR business more than 25 years and has worked with household names including Barbara Streisand, Michael J. Fox and David Bowie. Agency namesake Michael Levine recently incurred some public backlash after issuing a statement immediately after the death of former client Michael Jackson that some thought was insensitive.

Levine told PRNewser that he has worked with Kiss before and said of their success, “I am smart enough to know getting to the top is hard, staying at the top is harder.” We asked him if there was one booking he would want to score for the band, to which he replied, “Getting them to play the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl.” What, no halftime show?
