The leaves are dying, the trees are barren, the weather is getting colder, and there’s no money left in your bank account. That literal and figurative chill in the air can only mean one thing — it’s award season for public relations.

It’s that time of the year when we scour the Interweb for the best ideas and most original thoughts; we also remember those unlucky/unintelligent/unprepared folks ready to take their rightful place atop the pedestal for staging the worst communications failures of the year.

PR fails are those instances when a brand or personality just loses its for a moment. Unlike the year’s real “losers” (cough…Uber…sniff…American Apparel…hack…Lululemon), these juggernauts of jocularity can provide us with a bit of holiday comedy, after which we can all stand and applaud the fact that we were not in any way involved.

DiGiorno in Crosshairs for Animal Abuse on Its Dairy Farm

Animal Abuse Dairy FarmAs most flacks understand, PR is the world of “What have you done for me lately.”

It was only a couple of weeks ago when we were heralding the genius behind Nestle Co.-owned company (also behind California Pizza Kitchen, Tombstone and Jack’s) during a live tweet symposium during NBC’s live production of “The Sound of Music.”

All that jocularity has been put to sleep with this unfortunate and mournful report that its dairy farm, Wiese Brothers Farm, has been caught on YouTube abusing cows. Many of them.

DiGiorno Pizza Delivers Awesome with Live Tweets of ‘The Sound of Music’

sound-of-music-live-tweeting-digiornoSo, last night, I’m re-living my early childhood when my mother thought forcing me to sit through Julie Andrews twerking … eh, twirling (sorry) … in the Alps would soften my soul somehow. Meh? ICYMI: NBC aired a live presentation of “The Sound of Music” featuring Carrie Underwood.

While I’m sitting there with my baby girl, Twitter is blowing up my phone. Being the social media troll I am, I had to peek and then, like a reality TV person on the hippie lettuce with the munchies, I began craving pizza. I brave the ice storm North Texas is experiencing and buy a garlic-crusted pepperoni. Well played, DiGiorno.
