Spin the Agencies of Record: foursquare, Kaplow Part Ways

Yesterday, PRWeek wrote about Foursquare‘s agency search after cutting ties with Kaplow, which it signed as AOR in October 2010. Today we received a statement from Kaplow’s president and CEO Liz Kaplow: “We have a very strong partnership with foursquare and have greatly enjoyed working with them, and we hope there will be opportunities to work together on projects in the future.”

Foursquare PR manager Erin Gleason added in a comment via email: “Kaplow was a great partner for the past year. We hope there will be opportunities to work together on projects in the future.”

According to PRWeek, the account was worth six figures annually and services included media relations and consumer education efforts.

More account changes after the jump.

PRNewser Poll: Will You Use Foursquare or Facebook?

Last week, in anticipation of Halloween, we asked whether Halloween was an important holiday for the PR industry. More than two-thirds of respondents said “Somewhat,” despite the fact that the holiday is a $6 billion business. Those respondents agreed with the statement “Only certain brands can take advantage of the holiday’s PR opportunities.” Those who did execute Halloween campaigns, feel free to offer suggestions and anecdotes in the comments.

In Facebook news, the social network introduced a new deals platform that offers incentives for checking in on its Places application. According to our friends at AllFacebook, “just about every other check-in platform has been heavily criticized for lacking a significant incentive to get users to check-in.” Already, the Gap has signed on to give away 10,000 pairs of jeans. American Eagle Outfitters, Chipotle, and the San Francisco 49ers have also signed on.

Foursquare Selects Kaplow as AOR

Foursquare has selected Kaplow PR as AOR, providing media relations and messaging services and executing an education campaign about the uses of the application. Foursquare didn’t issue an RFP, but selected Kaplow out of a group of seven agencies, Foursquare PR manager Erin Gleason told PRWeek.

Gleason went on to say that the firm was chosen for its history with tech and consumer PR. Kaplow also opened a West coast office in June, and the East coast/West coast capability played a role in their selection. Nissa Anklesaria, an SVP with Kaplow, said this is one of the first clients that the firm has “brought on board to leverage both offices.”

Foursquare Gets Funding; Will Any Money Go To PR?

foursquare_logo.png

News broke yesterday that fast growing location services startup Foursquare had raised a $20 million funding round, valuing the company at $95 million. Foursquare says it now has 1.7 million users.

Despite the new funding, the company continues to operate as a scrappy startup in many ways. For example, its PR manager, Erin Gleason, also doubles as office manager.

We asked Gleason if any of the funding will be used to expand Foursquare’s marketing or PR department. She replied:

Hiring is definitely one of our top priorities right now — we’re primarily focusing on hiring more engineers, but I’m sure we’ll be expanding other teams as well over the next few months. No concrete plans right now…

Gleason joined Foursquare this past May from Google, where she was manager, global communications & public affairs. She also served as deputy field organizer for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
