Roll Call: SHIFT Communications, SHADOW PR, Smithsonian Media and More

SHIFT Communications has announced the addition of Victoria Shaw as vice president in its San Francisco office. She joins SHIFT with more than 14 years of communications and marketing experience working with organizations of all sizes — from start-ups through Fortune 500 companies. SHADOW PR, a full-service fashion, beauty, lifestyle and hospitality publicity agency based in New York City, has announced that Liza Bychkov and Michelle Davidson have been named partners. Bychkov and Davidson, formerly Vice Presidents of the Fashion/Beauty and Hospitality/Lifestyle divisions, respectively, have worked with the agency’s Principals, Brad Zeifman and Lisette Sand-Freedman for nearly a decade and were instrumental in the company’s development and overall success. Lori Erdos has been named business development director of digital at Smithsonian Media. She had been VP of advertising sales at Gannett. (MB)

Ben Schneider has been named leader of the media measurement and analytics team at Edelman Berland, the insights and analytics subsidiary of Edelman. Schneider previously worked as director of strategy and business development at Report International, and in the past he held positions at Dow Jones, Cision and CARMA International. Do Paywalls Dramatically Impact PR?

New figures from the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism further demonstrate the financial hurdles the newspaper industry faces: for every dollar newspapers earn digitally, they’re losing seven in print. (PaidContent offers a detailed breakdown of the study.)

“The papers that are succeeding are those that have pushed harder to change their sales staffs, have pushed digital even at the risk of putting less effort into the old categories that pay the bills, have taken more risks — have fought against the deep ‘inertia’ that many of the executives describe,” said Tom Rosenstiel, Pew project director, in an email to the NY Times.

As the number of print readers has declined, many outlets have beefed up online content and tried to add online advertisers. Moreover, paywalls are becoming more popular.

Revolving Door: Univision’s GOP Boycott, ‘Erin Burnett OutFront,’ ‘Marie Claire,’ and More

Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Jon Huntsman, and Michele Bachmann say they will not take part in a Univision debate scheduled for January because of allegations that the Spanish-language media outlet pushed an embarrassing story about a relative to Sen. Mark Rubio (FL-R) after he refused to be interviewed for a Univision program. Univision denies this. [via The Miami Herald blog]

The BBC is to cut 2,000 jobs and will be changing its programming line up in order to trim 20 percent from its budget over the next five years.

Arthur C. Nielsen Jr., who built the Nielsen company beyond TV and radio ratings, died at the age of 92.

Marie Claire has chosen Geraldine Sealy as editor-at-large and Joyce Chang as deputy editor. Sealy, the former deputy editor of Whole Living, and Chang, the former deputy editor of People Style Watch, replace Abigail Pesta and Anne Fulenwider. [via NY Observer]
