GCI Health, a New York-based agency specializing with an extensive roster of healthcare clients, has named Elliot Levy and Mary Kate Watkins to SVP roles. Levy, who has 10 years of experience in the healthcare communications field, will focus on corporate social responsibility efforts to coincide with the enactment of President Obama’s healthcare reform law. This is a return of sorts for Levy, who began his career as an account executive at the same firm almost a decade ago. In her new role, Watkins will use her own experience to expand the agency’s reach in the beauty, aesthetics and consumer health sectors. (PR Week)

Genesis Media announced the appointment of Melissa Bonnick as its new senior director of advertising operations. In this role, Bonnick will be responsible for leading the development of Genesis Media’s advertising operations team. This includes the management of advertiser and publisher account implementation and management, campaign execution, new platform evaluation and business intelligence. Before joining Genesis Media, Bonnick was the director of advertising and sponsorships for I-play, an interactive gaming company. (Release)

Frank Kavilanz has been named senior vice president for Strategy and Business Development at NowThis News. Kavilanz comes from NBC News, where he was the vice president of strategy and partnership. NowThis News, which launched in September, is a video news network founded by Huffington Post vets Ken Lerer and Eric Hippeau which makes short, original videos and is looking to reinvent video news for the digital generation via social networks and strategic partnerships with legacy publications like The Atlantic and hot news sites like BuzzFeed and Mashable. Moreover, they’re working with different clients, are staffed with people that have varying priorities, and have created a unique style that makes finding the right firm kind of like finding the right boyfriend or girlfriend. Do you have things in common? Are you heading in the same direction? Do you both like watching Bravo reality shows and sports?

Oh… yeah… right. PR jobs. Gotta find the right firm. How do you do that? Start at the start.

“Looking for a job should be a job,” says Margarita Miranda-Abate, SVP of the consumer lifestyle practice at Kaplow. “Why are you not happy where you are? What’s not fulfilling you? You should know why you’re making the switch.” In other words, take some time for introspection to determine what you’d like to do. Health Care Industry, PR Pros Prepare for Tomorrow’s SCOTUS Ruling

Tomorrow is another big day for the Supreme Court, with the ruling on the Affordable Care Act, President Obama’s health care reform legislation, coming down. Everyone will be impacted either which way the decision falls — families, the elderly, those without health insurance, and all of the companies involved in providing, managing, and paying for health care. Those companies, and their PR consultants, have the tough task of preparing for the unknown.

“We’ve been counseling our clients to get out ahead of the decision,” Brendan Daly, EVP and national director of corporate and public affairs at Ogilvy Washington, told us in an email message. “Several health insurance companies proactively communicated that, regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision, they would continue popular provisions of the health care law, such as allowing children to remain on their parents’ plan until age 26.”

“No matter how the court rules, the future of health care is changing,” he continued. “Companies should focus on communicating about their contribution to transforming the health care system – how they are working to improve health care delivery and quality of care, while working to reduce costs and waste.”

Mary Jane Walker has joined Weber Shandwick as SVP of corporate healthcare based out of the New York office. Besides her work on big healthcare clients, Walker will also be helping companies experiencing a major shift, like a CEO change or corporate restructuring. Walker was previously an SVP at Hill+Knowlton Strategies.

GCI Health has announced three executive hires. Andrea Pellicciari joins the firm as SVP handling neurology, urology, and advocacy accounts. She comes to the firm with 15 years of experience including work with clients like Allergan and Roche Molecular Systems. Mary Kate Watkins has joined the firm as VP, focused on consumer health and beauty. And Jennifer Gordon joins as senior media specialist. She was previously a producer at CNN and a line producer at Maryland NBC station, WBAL-TV.

NBCUniversal‘s Integrated Media group has announced four promotions to newly-created positions. Hilary Smith has been named SVP of comms and integrated media marketing, managing consumer and trade marketing and making her an overall strategist for the group. She’ll continue to lead comms for for iVillage, Fandango, DailyCandy, and Television Without Pity. She was previously SVP of comms for NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media. Bari Komitee has been promoted from director of Women at NBCU, Integrated Media, to VP of marketing. She joined the company in 2010. Lenore Moritz is now VP of comms for Integrated Media and iVillage. She joined the company last spring from Dan Klores Communications. And Craig Coleman is now VP of partnership marketing for the group. He was previously Director of marketing for Green is Universal, Healthy at NBC, and Hispanics at NBCU.

Chandler Chicco Companies (part of inVentiv Health) has acquired two German healthcare firms: Haas & Health Partner Public Relations and SanCom Creative Communication Solutions. CCC took a 19.9 percent interest in these firms in 2008. The acquisitions add 33 staffers (23 from the former, 10 from the latter), bringing Chandler Chicco’s staff total to 380 around the world. Both firms will continue with their current names and leadership.

Michael Sneed has been named VP of global corporate affairs at Johnson & Johnson, effective January 1, Ad Age reports. He will lead the global marketing and PR efforts as the company tries to comeback from a series of recalls. Brian Perkins, corporate VP of corporate affairs, will retire in March, but the company insists that Sneed is taking a broader role and is not replacing Perkins. The company is has also had a number of layoffs in the marketing area. Recalls since 2009 have cost the company $1 billion in sales, the story says.

John Shea has been named CMO and EVP of integrated media at NBCUniversal‘s Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media Division, a newly-created role that will include revenue-driving responsibilities. In this position, he’ll lead the research, sales, and marketing across the company, including Women at NBCU and Green is Universal. He’ll also be involved with the company’s digital properties, like Fandango and DailyCandy. Shea spent a big part of his 20-year career with MTV Networks.

In addition, Jonathan Gibs has joined NBCUniversal as SVP of digital research in the Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media Division, another new position. He was previously an SVP at the Nielsen Company.

Kim Sammons has been named SVP and deputy director of GCI Health‘s Atlanta office. Sammons has a lead role in services targeting patient advocates.* Previously she was a VP at the firm For Momentum. She has also worked on campaigns for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other organizations.

GCI Health has three executive announcements. Catherine Falcetti joins the firm as an SVP. She was previously with MSLGroup for 11 years, most recently serving as an SVP in their healthcare group. Also joining from MSLGroup is Robyn Leventhal who is a VP at GCI now. Besides her healthcare work, Leventhal also brings FDA regulatory experience. Julie Fleisher joins as a VP from Ruder Finn where she was a VP of corp comms. She has worked with a number of pharma clients over the years.

Ann Botticelli has joined Hawaiian Airlines as SVP of corporate communications and public affairs, effective October 3. She will step down from her position as VP of community relations and comms at Kamehameha Schools on September 30. She’s replacing Al Hoffman who is retiring on October 3. [via MauiNow.com]

Becky Lauer has joined GCI Health as SVP, director of media. She will counsel clients across the firm on media strategy, story ideas, and targeting the appropriate audiences. She was previously with MSLGroup for 11 years, last serving as SVP, director of broadcast media/global health working with clients including Roche and Merck.

Prior to joining MSL, she had a 20-year career in broadcast journalism, working at CNN, Fox News, and CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners has chosen GCI Health as its AOR. The firm’s New York office will work on the account, focusing on raising awareness of the organization and the group it represents as the U.S. healthcare system changes.

Amyris, an alternative energy company, has chosen Schwartz Communications and its cleantech practice as AOR. Amyris uses an “industrial synthetic biology platform” to create alternatives to petroleum fuels.

Dr. Lewis-Hall will be honored at this year's HBA Woman of the Year Luncheon.

GCI Health is working with the Healthcare Businesswomen Association on a pro bono basis to promote the 2011 Woman of the Year event, taking place Thursday, May 5 in New York City. The luncheon is attended by more than 2,000 in the healthcare industry.

This is the 22nd annual luncheon, and the organization will be honoring Freda Lewis-Hall, chief medical officer at Pfizer. Dr. Lewis-Hall has a 30-year career that spans across medical practice, government work, pharma, and other areas. She was appointed to her current post at Pfizer in 2009.

GH will also conduct outreach for the nonprofit’s other philanthropic efforts. The account will be handled out of the Los Angeles office by SVP Dan Zukowski.

Cookie Jar Entertainment, makers of the Caillou line of toys launching this Spring, has selected Child’s Play Communications for PR services. The firm, which specializes in PR targeting moms, will use its Team Mom blogger network to promote the line. According to Child’s Play president Stephanie Azzarone, the Team Mom network will “not only highlight features and benefits in their reviews, but also share their child’s personal experience with the product, while typically including photos and often video of their children interacting with it.”

'Deadliest Warrior' is one of the shows on MTV's Spike TV. MTV's Entertainment Group has a new EVP.

Hortense Nastase has been named the MD of GolinHarris Bucharest, the agency’s new office to serve the Eastern European market. Nastase previously spent 11 years with Lowe PR, where she was managing partner and director since 2008. The PR department at Lowe is being rebranded to GolinHarris. Clients include Unilever, Electrolux, and Johnson & Johnson.

William Reihl has joined Weber Shandwick as North American EVP of the firm’s global consumer practice. He will report to Lisa Sepulveda, president of the practice, based here in New York. Most recently, Reihl was EVP and New York consumer practice director at Ogilvy PR.

Kelly Cusumano has joined GCI Health as SVP and deputy director of the firm’s Atlanta office. She will report to the Atlanta market leader, Valerie Lind. Cusumano was previously a VP at HealthSTAR PR. She has experience in the men’s health and autoimmune disease categories.
