Last night on ABC World News, George Stephanopoulos announced an astonishing 1,000 percent increase in the number of people registering to become bone marrow donors in the 24 hours following Robin Roberts’ announcement that she has a rare blood and bone marrow disease. Roberts shared the sad news during the GMA broadcast on Monday while sitting side-by-side with her colleagues, including Stephanopoulos.

According to the Be The Match registry, more than 3,600 people have signed up to become potential donors. An average day usually sees between 200 and 300.

Revolving Door: Newspapers Down, Magazines Up; Changes at ABC; and More

A new report from the USC Annenberg Center says that most newspapers will be gone in five years. But 239 magazines launched this year, up nearly a quarter from 2010.

Christiane Amanpour is leaving ABC‘s weekly news program This Week, though she is sticking around to contribute six ABC primetime specials per year, make ABC News appearances, and is launching a show on CNN International. George Stephanopoulos will be heading back to This Week, though many wanted to see Jake Tapper fill the job. For now, he’s just the substitute.

NBC is launching NBCLatino.com in 2012. Broadcasting & Cable says it’s the first broadcast network to launch a site that specifically targets Hispanics. CNNenEspanol.com launched in November. And NBC previously launched TheGrio.com, targeting Black audiences.

The NFL deals with Fox, NBC, and CBS will include more content across more platforms.

It was revealed this week that James Murdoch received an email indicating widespread hacking by News of the World reporters back in 2008, seeming to contradict Murdoch’s statements about when he learned of the activity. But he says he didn’t read the whole email chain. Really? [via The Guardian]

Will the Yahoo!/ABC News Partnership Change Your Media Strategy?

ABC News brought out the big guns this morning — Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, George Stephanopoulos, and more — to announce an enhanced partnership between ABC News and Yahoo! on Good Morning America. According to the press release, ABC News and Yahoo! News editorial teams will be working together to create “premium content” and cover big news events; there will be new original Web series, including “Newsmakers,” which launches today with an interview between President Obama and Stephanopoulos at 2:35 ET; and Good Morning America now has a co-branded website.

It’s been noted already across the media that Yahoo! and ABC News partnered more than a decade ago, but the partnership was dubbed “brand new” during the announcement this morning. Yahoo News has more unique visitors than any other website, The New York Times says.

Robert Gibbs Hits Morning Shows; Says 90% of Oil Will Be Captured By End of June

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs made the morning show rounds today, appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” NBC’s “Today” show, CBS’ “Early Show,” MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” and CNN’s “American Morning.”

The appearances come in advance of President Obama’s Oval Office address at 8 p.m. tonight, which will focus on the Gulf Coast oil spill.

“We are going to outline tonight…someone that will be in charge of a recovery plan,” Gibbs said on “Good Morning America.”

He also said that most of the spilling oil should be captured by the end of June. “If it’s capturing 50,000 barrels by the end of the month, that’s 90 plus percent, right?” asked “GMA” host George Stephanopoulos.

“Absolutely,” replied Gibbs.

On the “Today” show, host Matt Lauer asked Gibbs if the president’s recent trips to the Gulf Coast and tonight’s Oval Office address are “a little bit of theater.” Remember it was Lauer who got Obama to say the “a-word” in a recent interview. Watch Gibbs’ response after the jump.

Major Shifts At ABC PR Coincide With Recent Anchor Changes

abc_news_logo.gif

First on PRNewser: With the recent anchor changes at ABC News, there is a major shift in publicists representing each of the news broadcasts.

Natalie Raabe, who had been the publicist for “World News with Charles Gibson” moves to “Good Morning America.” Raabe worked with new co-anchor George Stephanopoulos at ABC’s Washington bureau. Joining Raabe at GMA is Alyssa Apple.

Current GMA publicist Bridgette Maney moves to prime-time, as “20/20″ gets a new co-anchor in Chris Cuomo. Maney worked closely with Cuomo at GMA.

And David Ford has been promoted to publicist and will now represent “World News with Diane Sawyer. The changes take effect today. All the publicists continue reporting to ABC News SVP Jeffrey Schneider.

UPDATE: Full memo from Schneider to staffers after the jump.

Changes at ABC ‘Played Without Publicity’

ABC is in the midst of a game of musical anchor chairs. Diane Sawyer is moving into the “World News” anchor chair starting Dec. 21, George Stephanopoulos has all but been announced to join “Good Morning America” next Monday and GMA host Chris Cuomo is leaving and possibly headed to “20/20.”

The Chicago Tribune‘s Phil Rosenthal reports, “there has been no major marketing campaign to speak of, no blitz of media interviews by either Sawyer, who is scheduled to take over on Dec. 21, the day before her 64th birthday, or Gibson, 66.” That’s not completely true. As TVNewser reports, ABC’s marketing team put together a video promo of Sawyer’s ten years with “Good Morning America.”

However, why would ABC go light on marketing and PR? Perhaps they have learned from CBS, which went all-out marketing Katie Couric‘s move to the Evening News, only to see a big ratings jump followed by a sharp fall. Many view Brian William‘s succeeding Tom Brokaw‘s as anchor of NBC Nightly News desk as a textbook example on how to manage this kind of story. NBC announced the news a full year in advance of the move, in order to help squash rumors and speculation.
