Roll Call: MWW, NATIONAL, and Burson-Marsteller

Steve Mnich has joined MWW Group as director of the San Francisco office. Besides client and new business work, Mnich will lead the startup division of the company, MWW Ventures. He was previously the MD at SS|PR, launching and leading the firm’s West coast office.

Tom Jones (not him)  has been promoted to SVP at Makovsky Health. He joined the firm in January 2011. Since joining, the practice has experienced 24 percent growth. Prior to that, he was the executive director of communications at Novartis.

Desiree Peterkin-Bell, director of comms and strategic communications for Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, is joining the Obama for America as senior advisor for communications in Pennsylvania. Before working with Mayor Nutter, Peterkin-Bell was the director of comms for Newark Mayor Cory Booker. [via]

Avigilon, a Canadian video surveillance solutions company, has chosen Ogilvy PR as its AOR in the U.S. after a competitive search. The firm’s work will focus on corporate communications, thought leadership, media relations targeting business and tech trade publications, and promotions for Avigilon products. The company also has plans to go public in the U.S. (It already trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange.) The goal is to raise awareness among decision makers, including those at the C-level, and prospective investors.

Buy.com has chosen Hotwire (the PR agency, not the travel site) for a branding campaign that will emphasize the company’s “friendly, transparent and honest” value proposition and to raise awareness of the e-commerce site. Hotwire launched in 2000 and has offices across Europe and Australia. The firm came to the U.S. in 2011 and now has offices in New York and San Francisco.

Pinterest has hired The OutCast Agency for what is starting as a short-term project but could go long-term. The firm is helping the network manage the intense interest it has generated with media relations support. [via Holmes Report]

New York’s Grand Central Terminal has chosen Goodman Media International to promote the landmark’s activities, retail shops, and restaurants on a local, national, and global level. The firm will also help the 100th anniversary celebration on February 1, 2013.

Sanford, FL has spent tens of thousands of dollars on outreach, according to the Orlando Sun-Sentinel. The city has hired Massey Communications for crisis comms, media strategy, and a “joint information center.” Sanford has spent $5,000 on crisis comms and $30,500 on Sony JumboTrons that broadcast a Monday meeting at a local park.

Spin the Agencies of Record: foursquare, Kaplow Part Ways

Yesterday, PRWeek wrote about Foursquare‘s agency search after cutting ties with Kaplow, which it signed as AOR in October 2010. Today we received a statement from Kaplow’s president and CEO Liz Kaplow: “We have a very strong partnership with foursquare and have greatly enjoyed working with them, and we hope there will be opportunities to work together on projects in the future.”

Foursquare PR manager Erin Gleason added in a comment via email: “Kaplow was a great partner for the past year. We hope there will be opportunities to work together on projects in the future.”

According to PRWeek, the account was worth six figures annually and services included media relations and consumer education efforts.

Audit, tax, and business advisory firm J.H. Cohn has selected Goodman Media International as its AOR. Goodman will build the reputation of Cohn’s accounting and auditing practice, the business investigation services team, and the Cohn Consulting Group. And it will position Cohn’s executives as experts on global market issues.

Wise PR has added four clients to its roster: Altitude Digital Partners, an advertising company for online publishers; FonGenie, a cloud-based business phone solutions company; Kiip, a mobile in-game advertising startup founded by teenage Brian Wong (!!); and Image Space Media, and advertising company that pairs brands with relevant images and video. Derek Jeter Honored by Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation

Scores of New York Yankees players, sportscasters and celebrities assembled at the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation’s eighth annual gala on Thursday evening at Chelsea Piers in New York.

They all turned out to pay tribute to Yankees captain Derek Jeter and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the 2000 Subway Series. The charity’s goal is to stop domestic abuse through educational programs. Goodman Media International handles their PR.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman also used the red carpet as an opportunity to talk with the media about what the upcoming season will look like for the team.
