Gowalla Going to Facebook

Gowalla, the other Foursquare, allowing for mobile check-ins, etc., has announced that it’s heading to Facebook. The service will terminate at the end of January. The Gowalla blog has said explicitly, “Facebook is not acquiring Gowalla’s user data.” Rather, they will provide users with a way to export their data.

In addition, Facebook tells Techcrunch that the social network isn’t acquiring Gowalla’s technology, but will rather serve as an “inspiration.” The company’s founders Josh Williams and Scott Raymond and a few team members will continue on with Facebook. The site speculates that Gowalla will somehow figure into Timeline when it launches.

Research: Americans Spending A Lot of Time on Social Networks, But Still Not Checking In

A Nielsen report shows that people are spending 23 percent of their time online cruising social networks. Facebook is the most popular networking site by far (140 million+ unique visitors in May, three times the network in the second spot), followed by Blogger, Twitter, then WordPress.

The report also shows that the average visitor is female and between the ages of 18 and 34.

E-Commerce Offers A New Tool for PR Campaigns

“We never sell ourselves as money-making; it’s much more about exposure. We guarantee foot traffic,” Julie Mossler, Groupon’s director of communications, told mediabistro during an interview for a feature published last week focused on the use of Groupon in PR.

The new social nature of retailing is opening up doors for publicists and marketers who’d like to add an e-commerce element to their campaigns. Groupon has been used mostly by local companies, but there could be opportunities for national brands as well. The key to making an impact is “compelling content,” says Stephanie Agresta, EVP and MD of social media at Weber Shandwick.

Gowalla Integrates with Foursquare

Gowalla has released the latest version of its iPhone app, which includes new features and an integration with its location-based app rival Foursquare.

With Foursquare, Gowalla check-ins will now be posted on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook Places, and Foursquare; users will get Foursquare Tips when they check-in; and you can earn Foursquare badges and Facebook Deals. Mashable also reports on some of the other changes, such as a new look and layout.

Gowalla CEO Josh Williams tells Mashable that the company intends to be a “socially curated guidebook” rather than another place for deals or games. Still, Foursquare could block Gowalla if it feels its business is threatened.

The app is heading to Android systems in 2011.
