GQ has named Kevin Sintumuang multimedia editor. Sintumuang comes to GQ from The Wall Street Journal, where he was features editor for its “Off Duty” section. Also at GQ, Ted Stafford has been promoted to fashion market director, and Will Welch has been promoted to senior editor, style. (Fishbowl NY)

CELEBUZZ has made several staffing changes. Executive editor of CELEBUZZ, Joseph Kapsch, has announced he is leaving his New York post. Meanwhile, Kristin Koch, formerly senior editor of style at XO Group, has been named senior editor. She also previously contributed to Vanity Fair and iVillage. Todd Gilchrist, who most recently worked for The Hollywood Reporter, is the new senior editor of film. And in New York, Lee Hernandez has joined CELEBUZZ from The Huffington Post, where he was a staff editor. His official new title is senior staff editor. (FishbowlLA)

David Rakoff, Writer and Humorist, Dead at 47

At the core of all PR is humanity, and David Rakoff understood humanity like no one else. His insights were naked and powerful, his life heartfelt and poignant. Boldly insecure and damned funny, Rakoff connected with people because he was honest about being sad. For Rakoff, being unhappy was OK, even normal. For many of us, this unwelcome truth was beaten out of us as children and replaced with Santa Claus.

As noted in this Gothamist post, Rakoff opened his most recent book, Half Empty, with the lines “We were so happy. It was miserable.” If that doesn’t make you laugh, then I’ve got some terrible news for you about Santa Claus. Rakoff wrote two other collections of essays, Fraud and Don’t Get Too Comfortable, in addition to publishing pieces in magazines from GQ to Spin. He was also a popular contributor to This American Life on NPR.

Rakoff’s death was especially notable because he treated his disease with humor, which is a form of courage we give to others to spare them our pain. Rakoff, born in Canada, was also a classic New Yorker—the kind of New Yorker who believed that art and its ability to bring together, and not money and its ability to separate, was at the core of the city’s soul. He will be missed. RIP David Rakoff. You can relax now.

PR Pros Make ‘GQ’ List of Washington’s Powerful

GQ has published a list of its 50 most powerful people in Washington and a few spots are occupied by PR pros. At number 23 are Heather and Tony Podesta, who each run lobbying and government relations firms, Heather Podesta + Partners and Podesta Group respectively. Their blurb says they’ve raised $90 million during the Obama administration.

In at number 42 are Jayne Sandman and Barbara Martin from BrandlinkDC (technically two people, which raises the number of people on the list, but OK GQ). They’re joined in that slot by Brightest Young Things blogger Svetlana Legetic. Which raises the number one more, but who’s counting.

Revolving Door: ‘Vanity Fair’s List; the ‘Rookie’ Launch; Rev. Al Sharpton, and More

As predicted by The OutCast Agency’s TJ Snyder, the Vanity Fair annual “New Establishment” list has been revealed and there are techies aplenty at the top. Facebook‘s Mark Zuckerberg is number one for a second year, and also on the list are Sergey Brin and Larry Page from Google (#2); Apple’s Tim Cook and Jonathan Ive (#4); and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey (#5). (Facebook, Amazon, Andreeson Horowitz, Netflix, and Zynga are OutCast clients.)

New York has signed on as an advertising partner for teen fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson’s new site Rookie, launching on Monday. There was much talk about a partnership between Gevinson and former Sassy editor Jane Pratt. Those plans didn’t become reality, but word is that Pratt will be involved in some way, shape, or form with Rookie. Gevinson is 15 years old and EIC.

The Root talks with Rev. Al Sharpton about his new job with MSNBC. He made his official, though troubled, debut this week.

Elle has partnered with H&M to make items available for sale on the magazine’s website.

Yahoo will launch programming targeting 25 to 54-year-old women in October. [via Mediapost]

Revolving Door: Olbermann, ESPN, ‘GQ,’ and More

Keith Olbermann has been bringing a lot of attention to himself and Current TV with the debut of the latest iteration of Countdown. The ratings for the first episode were an impressive 179,000 for the 25-54 age group, which surpassed CNN and pleased Olbermann. The PR continued this week with an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Some noted that Olbermann used his new Current TV gig to criticize his former colleagues. “It may seem like score settling, but that’s part of the Olbermann brand. Successful TV talk hosts are able to meld their personalities and their material,” notes Time today. ”Olbermann’s gift on Countdown has been to turn his ‘me against the Man’ attitude into an ‘us against the Man’ mantra as he enjoins his audience to resist corporate power.”

Media Companies on a Tech Launching Spree

The Washington Post, GQ, and CNN have each announced new tech products and services.

WaPo has launched Trove, a free personalized news aggregator that uses Facebook Connect to collect information about the news and subjects that readers are interested in. Trove will also feature daily “Editor’s Picks” selections and editors will get involved by creating channels with their recommended sources. Comments features are available for reader engagement.

Users will see additional Facebook capabilities in the coming months. Currently, Trove is available on Android phones, Blackberrys, and desktop computers.

PRs on GQ‘s 50 Most Powerful People in DC List

GQ released it’s annual “The 50 Most Powerful People in D.C.” list today. Surprise, surprise: there are no external PR pros on the list. There are, however, a few administration officials that have “PR-ish” positions that made it on.

Valerie Jarrett, Senior Adviser and Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, comes in at number 16. Denis McDonough, Spokesperson, National Security Council (pictured), comes in at number 34. Read the full list here.
