Hearst Prepares for Lawsuit Over Unpaid Internships

We’ll begin this story with a disclaimer: Hearst is a brand rightfully known for producing great products including a large portion of this country’s best magazines. Based on Mediabistro’s “Cubes” tour of the Hearst offices, we’d say the company also treats its employees well.

That said, Hearst has a huge PR problem on its hands in the form of a big-news lawsuit—and its lawyers have begun to prepare by contacting affected parties in order to solicit positive testimony. We’re not quite sure that will work.

The story: When Diana Wang applied for an internship at Harper’s Bazaar, her only real goal was to make her mark on the fashion industry. She knew that it wouldn’t amount to a full-time job (it was her seventh unpaid internship), and she told New York Magazine of saving every penny in order to afford the opportunity to work as “head accessories intern” at Bazaar.

The work was considerable: Wang supervised eight other interns, and she claims that editors at the magazine told her that her internship “should be considered a real job.”

Unfortunately, the internship did not lead to the fashion gig she craved—or any other gig. Her supervisor was bold enough to tell her that she wasn’t ready for a job in fashion and that she should consider another internship. With that, she started considering her options. Given the fact that she worked a full-time schedule and drew no discernible benefits from the internship, Wang decided to file a lawsuit claiming that the internship was actually an unpaid job—and 3,000 other former interns joined her.

It will be hosted by reporter Wendy Bounds. This adds to the list of shows that the WSJ already has, including “Lunch Break” and “Mean Street.”

A former Harper’s Bazaar intern is suing Hearst for unpaid minimum wages. The plaintiff and her lawyers hope to build a class-action lawsuit. [via Reuters]

‘Vogue’ Is In Vogue on the Newsstands

Numbers released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations’ Rapid Report show that while much of the fashion magazine industry is suffering a loss in newsstand sales, Vogue is up about 16 percent from its average sales number for the first half of 2010.

Adweek suggests a few reasons for the jump: Hot covers featuring celebs like Lady Gaga in March (which sold 445,000 copies, the top seller for the first half), a rebound in the sale of luxury goods, and increased visibility of EIC Anna Wintour, which we noted a couple of weeks ago after Wintour’s acceptance speech at the Webbys went viral.

Marie Claire was down 21 percent (along with Harper’s Bazaar), with EIC Joanna Coles noting that a few chances it took with the cover didn’t pan out, like featuring a man, Bradley Cooper, perhaps before he revealed to the world that he could speak French. InStyle and People Stylewatch were among the other fashion magazines that took a hit.

The Audit Bureau numbers also show that Justin Bieber covers aren’t doing so well on the newsstands. According to WWD, Vanity Fair‘s Bieber cover is set to become the worst seller in 12 years. Other magazines, like Teen Vogue, which also featured the teen star also showed a dip in numbers.
