<title>Old Spice Scores Again With Mustafa/Fabio &#8216;Hunk Off&#8217;</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-25282" title="Mano-A-Mano-Old-Spice" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/files/2011/08/Mano-A-Mano-Old-Spice.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="200" /><a href="http://youtube-trends.blogspot.com/2011/08/old-spice-guy-vs-fabio-draws-millions.html">YouTube Trends</a> says the Old Spice face-off between <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Isaiah-Mustafa-profile.html">Isaiah Mustafa</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Fabio-profile.html">Fabio</a></strong>, dubbed <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/OldSpice">&#8220;Mano a Mano In El Baño,&#8221;</a> collected 22 million views. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE">&#8220;The Man Your Man Can Smell Like&#8221;</a> video and the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLTIowBF0kE&amp;feature=relmfu">July 2010 campaign</a> called &#8220;Questions&#8221; got millions more, but still.</p>
<p>And, in case you missed it (we did surprisingly), <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/07/28/old-spice-guy-wins/">Mustafa won</a>.</p>
<p>The campaign gets kudos from <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/08/03/old-spice-22m-views/">Mashable</a> and Gary Vaynerchuk on <em><a href="http://www.entrepreneur.com/blog/220104">Entrepreneur</a> </em>for giving Mustafa&#8217;s campaign additional legs and using Fabio&#8217;s ability to tap into people&#8217;s memories of advertising past. But Vaynerchuk also says that Old Spice missed an opportunity for further engagement. And <a href="http://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/spice-s-love-affair-serves-sales-purpose/228943/"><em>Ad Age </em>wonders</a> if there was a point to this exercise at all.</p>
<p>We, and many others, were worried that Mustafa might be going away. But now that he&#8217;s sticking around, we&#8217;re curious about what more he can possibly do with his shirtless Man-Man persona. Maybe when you&#8217;re a buff shirtless Man-Man the possibilities are endless.</p>

<title>So Old Spice Hasn&#8217;t Lost Its Mind</title>

<p>Last week, we thought Old Spice <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/old-spice-fabio-isaiah-mustafa_b24767">had gone crazy</a>. Turns out they&#8217;ve gone crazy like a fox.</p>
<p>While we were lamenting the possible loss of <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Isaiah-Mustafa-profile.html">Isaiah Mustafa</a></strong>, Old Spice and its ad firm <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Wieden-Kennedy-profile.html">Wieden &amp; Kennedy</a></strong> have decided to kick its publicity up a notch by pitting its successful spokesperson against Fabio, who also has had a lot of success as a spokesperson.</p>
<p>Rather than letting its old marketing gimmick go stale, the brand has added a new element <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/07/25/old-spice-guy-fabio-challenge/">&#8211; a duel&#8211;</a> to keep its marketing fresh and in the news. Kind of brilliant.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/836699/fabio-takes-on-old-spice-guy-duties">SheKnows.com notes</a> that these videos aren&#8217;t feeling the love on YouTube. <a href="http://theweek.com/article/index/217490/fabio-the-new-old-spice-guy">P&amp;G says</a> it&#8217;s not replacing Mustafa. Maybe Isaiah is busy with his <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/old-spice-man-wants-to-be-luke-cage-superhero_b21799">new film career</a>, and the company is testing the waters with <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/new-old-spice-ad-but-no-isaiah-mustafa_b19575">other spokesmen</a>.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Isaiah-Mustafa-profile.html">Isaiah Mustafa</a></strong> doesn&#8217;t want to be known as the Old spice guy forever. He&#8217;d also like to be known as Luke Cage, the <a href="http://marvel.com/universe/Cage,_Luke">Marvel Comics superhero</a> from Harlem!</p>
<p>A film version of the story is in the works and Mustafa has made it clear he wants to be in it. He filmed the video above to show what he can do. We believe it. But he&#8217;s got some stiff competition; Jamie Foxx and Idris Elba (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/">Stringer Bell!</a>) are also said to be in the running.</p>

<title>When Should Your Brand Get a New Mascot?</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-21595" title="ronald_mcdonald" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/files/2011/05/ronald_mcdonald-300x274.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="219" />McDonald&#8217;s CEO Jim Skinner took a stand on behalf of Ronald McDonald at last week&#8217;s annual shareholders meeting in the face of criticism that the clown mascot promotes unhealthy eating habits and childhood obesity.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ronald McDonald is an ambassador for McDonald&#8217;s, and he is an ambassador for good,&#8221; Skinner said. &#8220;He does not advertise unhealthy food to children.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, people continue to take issue with the mascot, wondering whether Ronald should be retired. Today, food website <a href="http://www.epicurious.com/articlesguides/blogs/editor/2011/05/mcdonalds-is-it-time-to-put-down-the-clown.html">Epicurious</a> asks whether there should be a change.</p>
<p>Recently, we&#8217;ve watched Aflac turn their search for <a href="https://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/aflac-auditions-turn-a-bad-joke-into-good-publicity_b18760">a new voice</a> for its duck mascot into a news story. Old Navy finally bid adieu to its <a href="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/17/old-navy-replaces-mannequins-with-music/">spokes-mannequins</a> in recent months. Capital One has added Alec Baldwin to its commercials, so could the Vikings be soon making an exit? And Old Spice has <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/new-old-spice-ad-but-no-isaiah-mustafa_b19575">toyed with the idea</a> of an ad without man mascot <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Isaiah-Mustafa-profile.html">Isaiah Mustafa</a>.</strong></p>

<p>With increasing activity on social media, P&amp;G has big plans for Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. But ratings for soap operas continue to decline, and the company has ended its 77-year sponsorship in the daytime dramas. The last P&amp;G soap opera, <em>As the World Turns</em>, ended in September. It was P&amp;G&#8217;s sponsorship that led to the term &#8220;soap opera.&#8221;</p>

<p>It&#8217;s apparent that things <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/politics/the_shirley_sherrod_news_cycle_168349.asp">move a lot quicker in the media these days</a>, but according to one PR executive, things should move equally as fast when tying a social media campaign to direct sales.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://www.whatsnextblog.com/archives/2010/07/old_spice_a_brilliant_tactic_whose_strategy_and_scent_reeks_1.asp">blog post</a>, <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/BL-Ochman-profile.html">B.L. Ochman</a></strong>, managing director of emerging media for Proof Integrated Communications, the digital marketing arm of Burson-Marsteller, said the recent YouTube update to the Old Spice &#8220;The Man Your Man Could Smell Like&#8221; campaign &#8220;reeks,&#8221; because &#8220;it has no follow-up&#8221; and hasn&#8217;t driven sales.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8230;you can&#8217;t eat, or pay bills with awareness. You gotta sell product,&#8221; she wrote. As many have pointed out to PRNewser, here are a few areas where Ochman is wrong.</p>
