Hollywood’s relationship with the military has needed counseling for quite some time. But it took Michelle Obama‘s call for support with the White House’s Joining Forces initiative to get either side to make the first move.

On Monday morning, they showed up in droves.

On a panel moderated by J.J. Abrams — whose own depiction of the military in Super 8 was criticized in the New York Times Media Decoder blog this week – the First Lady urged nearly 500 writers, directors, and producers to help “promote a better understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families” by integrating their experiences into TV, movie, and digital-media story lines.

Anyone who watched the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (or any of the countless re-airings) gasped a little when His Highness Steven Spielberg took the stage with writer/director J.J. Abrams and a couple of the young stars of his new film Super 8. The appearance, and the launch of the new trailer for the movie, was clearly intended to drum up some anticipation for the movie, which opens tomorrow.

They might want to do a lot more of this anticipation building. According to New York magazine’s Vulture blog, moviegoers aren’t clamoring to see Super 8.

Some fans were so mad, they started ranting on the Twitter and Human Target was trending. But it’s still cancelled last we heard. So that’s a shame.

The Hollywood Reporter took a closer look at some of the emotion expressed over the loss of these fan favorites.

“Crud,” wrote one tweeter.

“I am not happy with Fox!!!” exclaimed another.

And from a Fox-watcher possibly in the U.K.: “Oh bollocks.”

Some of the new shows are The New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel and Alcatraz by J.J. Abrams, the guy behind Lost, a show I actually did watch.

Abrams/Spielberg Movie Launched on Twitter Paramount Pictures announced today that it has launched the trailer for its upcoming J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg movie Super 8 on Twitter, a first for both the movie and the microblogging site. The trailer is available at Twitter.com/Super8Movie, and the Twitter hashtag is #Super8Movie. TechCrunch says the launch also has a collaboration with Facebook.

A trailer released in 2010 has been available on YouTube, and you can click below to watch.
