Hill+Knowlton Strategies, a global public relations and communications firm, has announced an elaborate expansion plan for Africa that will provide consultancy services to businesses across the continent.

“Our expansion plan in Africa will offer our clients unmatched experience, wisdom and creativity in the high-growth markets within the region,” said Jack Martin, global chairman and CEO.

The Pan-African strategy includes the immediate establishment of Hill+Knowlton Strategies offices in four African markets — Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ghana — and the near-term formation of offices in Nigeria and South Africa. Hill+Knowlton Strategies has announced that Amy McMichael Paddock, SVP and general manager of the firm’s Austin, TX office, will co-lead global client services with Vivian Lines, vice chair and co-head of client services. Paddock will work from Austin and report directly to H+K’s global chairman and CEO Jack Martin. In another shift, Bill Lauderback has also been named general manager of H+K Austin. Bill most recently worked as a senior advisor at Public Strategies, a role which allowed him to counsel clients on strategic campaign development and execution with a particular emphasis on government relations. In his new role, he will draw on more than 25 years of senior-level experience in business management, government affairs, public policy and communications. (Release)

Australia’s DEC PR has named Kirsty McRae as client services director and “head of consumer.” In her new role, Kirsty will champion the provision of the highest levels of client service across the agency’s key clients and build on the agency’s successful consumer business. Kirsty has more than 10 years industry experience across consumer and corporate PR along with the attendant expertise in global and domestic market initiatives. Her client portfolio includes P&G, Unilever, Nike, Bacardi, Billabong, Danone, Premier Foods, BMW Mini and Intercontinental Hotel Group. (Release)

Zing’s two most senior executives, Robert McEwen and Preya McMahon, have created a second brand, McEwen McMahon, which will offer more corporate public relations services while Zing remains a consumer PR brand. “Zing will continue to focus on the beauty, fashion, lifestyle and entertainment work that has been its hallmark,” the two principals said in a release, “while McEwen McMahon will be more of a high-level consultancy, advising C-suite executives on internal and external reputation management issues.” (Release)

Huffington Post ad sales chief Moritz Loew has been dismissed by AOL. According to Adweek, Loew believes the dismissal was the result of a background check and an outstanding warrant from a 2003 DWI charge. A spokesperson from AOL told Adweek that “Recent information has indicated that Moritz’s hiring did not meet AOL requirements.” (Adweek)

Manhattan was abuzz about ethics on Tuesday, with high profile speakers presenting on both ends of the spectrum. Ethisphere’s Best Practices in Ethics Communications workshop, held downtown, featured CEOs from Edelman and Hill+Knowlton Strategies, along with business and government officials. The State of NOW conference uptown hosted Jack Abramoff, convicted former Washington lobbyist and ethics violator extraordinaire.

Hill + Knowlton Strategies has launched the Corporate Advisory Group, a division focused on reputation and public risk at the highest levels of business. The group will be led by H+K’s global chairman and CEO Jack Martin and London-based global vice chair of the corporate practice, Andrew Laurence.

Just last week, the firm announced that it had launched a research division and merged with a firm in Russia, expanding its reach in the region. The firm is also dealing with a possible court case involving Weber Shandwick.

Gidez Promoted to H&K Global Crisis Lead

Hill & Knowlton has promoted Chris Gidez to a new position: global crisis practice leader, reporting to Jack Martin, chairman and CEO of the firm.

Gidez is now part of the senior global leadership team, and will help build and maintain the risk management and crisis business across the network.

Gidez joined H&K in 2005 as head of the U.S. risk and crisis management group. Prior to that, he worked with Chevron.

Groty Named to New Position at H&K

Amanda Groty has been promoted to global strategy director, a new role, at Hill & Knowlton. In this new job, she will partner with members of senior leadership and both internal and external analysts to decide where the firm should invest its efforts towards new business, growth opportunities, talent, and other areas. She will report to the firm’s chairman and CEO, Jack Martin.

Groty joined H&K in 2002 and has worked with Fortune 1000 clients internationally. Prior to joining H&K she was MD at Beattie Media, building the firm’s London operation.

Even more change at Hill & Knowlton to announce – Andrew Bleeker has joined the firm as global digital practice director. He will report to Jack Martin, H&K chairman and CEO. The previous director, Julie Atherton, is now Martin’s global senior adviser on integrated communications.

Bleeker was the founder and principal at Bully Pulpit Interactive and served as director of Internet advertising for Obama for America during the President’s 2008 campaign. He was responsible for all of the online advertising for the campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Dewey Square Group has named Karen Breslau principal in the communications practice in California. She was recently the director of executive comms for the office of the president of the University of California. She has also served at Newsweek‘s San Francisco bureau chief.

Luce Named H&K COO

More leadership changes at Hill & Knowlton. Ken Luce has been named global COO of the firm, reporting to the firm’s new global chairman and CEO Jack Martin. In the role, he will focus on growth and best practices in client services, marketing, and HR.

Previously, Luce was president of global client management at Weber Shandwick where he created management programs and devised best practices for the firm’s multi-national clients.

We spoke with Luce today about the changes, the merger with Public Strategies, which went into effect January 1, and the impact on the firm.

H&K CEO Taaffe Stepping Down

Paul Taaffe, Hill & Knowlton’s chairman and CEO, is stepping down from his post. Taaffe has been with the firm 18 years and has served as CEO and chair since 2002, PRWeek reports.

It was announced in November that Hill & Knowlton and Public Strategies would merge. That merge took effect on January 1. Jack Martin, founder and chairman of Public Strategies, became global executive chairman of H&K. Martin is now also global CEO.

Massey Energy Hires Public Strategies In Wake of Mine Tragedy

WPP-owned Public Strategies has been hired by Massey Energy Co. following an incident in which 29 miners died at one of the company’s coal mines in West Virginia earlier this month.

Public Strategies is staffed by political heavyweights including former George W. Bush staffers Dan Bartlett and Mark McKinnon, as well as Jeff Eller, a former White House aide to then-President Bill Clinton.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news and has some background on the connections between the two companies:

Public Strategies also has ties to Massey’s lead outside director, retired Navy Admiral Bobby Inman, a longtime professor at the University of Texas’ Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, which is supported by the LBJ Foundation; Public Strategies’ chairman Jack Martin – a longtime Democratic Party hand – is a foundation board member, and McKinnon is a lecturer at the LBJ School.

Goldman Sachs is also working with Public Strategies. Newsweek correspondent and MSNBC analyst Richard Wolffe briefly worked for the firm this past fall.
