Did Napolitano’s “System Worked” Comment Force Second Obama Statement?

President Obama made his second public speaking appearance yesterday afternoon since the attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas day. Was it the flack the administration has been receiving from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano‘s “the system worked” comment that lead to the second appearance? CNN’s Ed Henry said the second statement was “unexpected” and asked if it was because Obama was “feeling heat from critics.”

Napolitano has since clarified that she meant the system worked only after the failed bomb attempt by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was known. Who approved this administration stance? Rightly so, the American people are not as concerned about what happened after the attempted bombing, but with the fact that we did not catch the bomber before he boarded the flight.

Obama’s messaging yesterday was clearly aimed to address Napolitano’s comment, as he used the words “systemic failure” to describe the event. The question now is if his second statement will be enough, or if the administration will have to go even further.

What A Difference A Day Makes: Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Changes Course on Statements

Government officials, namely Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano have been making the media rounds since an attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas day.

“…the system has worked really very, very smoothly over the course of the past several days,” said Napolitano in an interview yesterday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Today on NBC’s “Today” show she said, “Our system did not work in this instance…No one is happy or satisfied with that. An extensive review is under way.”

Napolitano said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today her original statement was “taken out of context” and that it was was in reference to the fact that, “once this incident occurred we were able to immediately notify the 128 flights already in the air from Europe.”

That may be the case, but one would think the White House isn’t pleased with Napolitano’s original comment, given the sensitivity of the issue, and the fact that the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had already been put on a terrorist watch list. More to come…
