Glover Park Group announced that co-founder Joe Lockhart is returning to the firm to serve as senior advisor. Lockhart, who served as chief spokesman for the Clinton administration from 1998 to 2000 before helping to start Glover Park in 2001, most recently served as vice president for global communications at Facebook. In his new role, he will be responsible for helping the firm shape its communication strategies. (Release)

Hill+Knowlton Strategies announced that Sergio Morales has been appointed U.S. practice leader for consumer and marketing communications, effective immediately. In this role, Morales will be responsible for providing strategic counsel and oversight on consumer and marketing communications clients, as well as building and strengthening client relationships within the practice. He will report directly to Dan Bartlett, president and CEO of Hill+Knowlton Strategies U.S. (Release)

Simon & Schuster recently restructured, promoting Brian Belfiglio to vice president and director of publicity of both the Scribner and Touchstone publicity departments. Touchstone director of publicity Marcia Burch will depart on February 11. Both moves were part of a reorganization that began at the publisher in October. (GalleyCat)

WPP Purchases Glover Park Group

London-based WPP has purchased Glover Park Group, the D.C.-based firm specializing in government relations and strategic comms that was started in 2001. The firm has a staff of 140 people, four offices in New York, Los Angeles, Boulder, CO, and Washington, and $60 million in annual revenue, according to Politico.

Glover Park was started by four well-connected Democratic operatives: Carter Eskew, Joe Lockhart, Mike Feldman, and Chip Smith. Lockhart joined Facebook as VP of comms in June.

According to the press release announcing the transaction, it’s still subject to regulatory approval. A spokesperson at GPG tells PRNewser that the leadership will remain the same and the remaining founding partners “have committed to staying with the firm for the foreseeable future.”

Smith is CEO; Eskew and Feldman are both MDs at the firm.

WPP’s firms include Hill & Knowlton, Quinn-Gillespie, Dewey Square Group, and Burson-Marsteller. The company reported Q3 revenue of £2.46 billion and organic growth of 4.7 percent, though taking a conservative stance about the future.

Facebook Likes Joe Lockhart

In plenty of time to enjoy the IPO, Facebook has hired former White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart as VP of corporate communications. The Dem heavyweight will relocate to California once he sorts his family details. Lockhart became a household name after succeeding Mike McCurry during the Clinton impeachment trials in 1998.

He went on to open the very powerful Glover Park Group firm in 2001, and help John Kerry run for President in 2004.

Showing their need to navigate the choppy waters within the Beltway, Facebook also talked to former Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs about the position.

Gibbs Going to Facebook?

The NY Times’ Andrew Ross Sorkin hears that Facebook is talking with former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs about a comms position that he would take in preparation for the social network’s 2012 IPO. Compensation for the job could be in the millions of dollars and Gibbs would report to Elliot Schrage, VP for global comms, who went to Facebook from Google in 2008. But, the story says, “the discussions could collapse.”

Just over a week ago, it was announced that The OutCast Agency co-founder Caryn Marooney was heading to Facebook to serve in a new position, director of tech communications. Politico says former Bill Clinton press secretary and Glover Park Group founder Joe Lockhart is also in the running for the Facebook job.

The Reviews Are In: Jay Carney Was Nervous

There was some paper shuffling, a little stiffness, signs of nerves, but Jay Carney made it through his first briefing without any huge mishaps.

We caught a chunk of the press briefing and there was a big difference between yesterday’s press conference and the ease of Robert Gibbs. But, there will be plenty of chances to settle in. According to Carney, things will “evolve” in terms of frequency of briefings and other rules.

“I don’t have a new plan to lay on the table. I want to see how it works,” he said. What did other press sec watchers think?
